The Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX) is an advanced stellarator located at the College of Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison. This experiment utilizes modular coils to generate a quasi-helical magnetic field structure and operates at magnetic field strengths of 1 Tesla to confine plasmas with temperatures exceeding 2 keV. Research goals include investigating neoclassical and turbulent heat transport, studying plasma flow in the direction of symmetry, exploring stellarator divertor configurations and developing new plasma diagnostics. The laboratory is seeking a lab manager to oversee hardware upgrades, coordinate operational plans and maintenance, and serve as the primary point of contact for facility-related matters.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Serves as part of a multidisciplinary team, conceptualizes, specifies, designs, constructs, integrates, operates, tests, calibrates, documents, and improves unique, large-scale instrumentation systems
  • Conducts research and development of new processes, techniques, and approaches for use in advanced instrumentation systems in collaboration with scientists and other research staff
  • Provides innovative expertise and experience in an area of discipline. Uses universally accepted computer design applications for modeling, sophisticated analysis, and optimization of large-scale design and fabrication efforts
  • Prepares reports of design status and/or technical research for professional organizations, government/sponsor review boards, and design reviews. Participates in reviews
  • Supports or is directly responsible for efforts to coordinate project activities
  • May supervise the daily activities of unit or program staff, identifies and facilitates staff training opportunities, and resolves routine personnel issues
  • Supports efforts to identify problems, issues and needs, and provides solution options in support of strategic decision-making

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $80,000, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in the field of software engineering and mechanical design.

  • Experience working with high current magnetic field coils and vacuum systems.

  • Experience in machining of components and laboratory organization

  • One-year post-degree experience in Mechanical Engineering or Nuclear Engineering


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in performing high-temperature plasma experiments.

  • Working knowledge in the design of optical components.

  • Experience with designing microwave transmission lines and plasma heating systems.


Education:

BS required, MS preferred, in Physics or Engineering Discipline.
