Utah Transportation Engineering Practice Leader (AVP/VP) - Cottonwood Heights, UT

This role may be filled at the Assistant Vice President or Vice President level based on experience and demonstrated market leadership. Volkert is seeking an experienced and collaborative leader to lead our Utah engineering practice. This role provides executive leadership for the continued growth, performance, and market presence of our Utah operations, with an emphasis on strengthening client relationships, developing high-performing teams, and delivering high-quality infrastructure solutions across the state.

The Utah Practice Leader will play a critical role in shaping our strategic direction in the state, building upon our established presence while expanding our services, influence, and long-term impact statewide.

Position Overview

Lead the strategic direction, operational performance, financial health, and client engagement efforts for Volkert's Utah practice. You will drive responsible growth across the state by fostering long-term partnerships with public-sector clients, aligning multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring consistent delivery of quality projects aligned with Volkert's values of Quality, Service, Safety, and Ethics.

This role is ideal for a relationship-driven leader who values collaboration, steady growth, and meaningful community impact - while embracing accountability for market leadership and performance.

What you'll be doing:

  • Provide executive leadership and overall accountability for Volkert's Utah engineering practice
  • Develop and execute a strategic growth plan aligned with regional and national objectives
  • Cultivate and strengthen executive-level relationships with UDOT, municipalities, state agencies, and key stakeholders
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to strategically expand services in alignment with client needs and market demand
  • Oversee operational and financial performance, ensuring projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and to Volkert's quality standards
  • Lead proposal strategy, positioning, and pursuit execution; participate in high-level client presentations
  • Guide financial performance including budgeting, forecasting, WIP management, revenue performance, and accounts receivable oversight
  • Mentor and develop leaders within the Utah team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and professional growth
  • Support targeted recruitment efforts to thoughtfully grow and strengthen the Utah practice

What you need to have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Utah
  • 10-15+ years of progressive civil engineering experience
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
  • Valid driver's license
  • A satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)

Preferences and Characteristics:

  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering
  • Experience leading teams and managing projects within the public-sector environment
  • Established relationships or demonstrated success building partnerships with UDOT and other Utah agencies
  • Experience driving business development and market positioning efforts
  • Commitment to delivering quality work while strengthening trusted client relationships
