The Materials Handler I performs manual and clerical duties related to shipping, receiving, inspecting, storing, issuing, and delivering a variety of materials, equipment, and supplies. This role delivers orders to various areas around campus. Incumbents may be responsible for a higher volume, high dollar amount and/or assigned responsibility over one or more specified areas. Incumbents are expected to handle high-dollar cost and fragile equipment or supplies and hazardous materials, such as chemicals or gases, when necessary. May be required to lift/transport a maximum of 60 lbs. Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Stocks warehouse with products from outside vendors and returns from units.
  • Ensures proper rotation of products based on received or expiration date.
  • Fills orders based on requests.
  • Informs buyer of mistakes and shortages.
  • Checks quality of products received, checks, and inspects produce.
  • Dates all products and puts items on carts.
  • Delivers orders to units in a timely manner according to schedule.
  • Delivers products that are a direct ship.
  • Receives and returns items not in food service.
  • Puts produce away and take daily inventory.
  • Informs units if their orders are incorrect.
  • Gets cover sheets from buyer and computer generated cover sheets.
  • Checks invoices against cover sheets.
  • Takes paper work to office when completed.
  • Opens and closes receiving area.
  • Orders items through buyer and gives buyer daily stock levels.
  • Cleans dock and receiving area.
  • Greets and serves customers in a friendly courteous manner.
  • Provides suggestions and input to supervisor.
  • Works harmoniously with coworkers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of automated or computerized system operations.
  • Knowledge of safety practices.
  • Knowledge of proper perishable product handling and storage.
  • Skill in operating forklift or other materials handler equipment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to occasionally transport/move a maximum of 60 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
  • Must be available to work days, nights, weekends and holidays.
