We are seeking a Principal Advisor, Communications to shape and lead strategic communications for Rio Tinto's Borates business-driving innovation, engagement, and brand excellence.

Based in southern California, the position requires an ability to deliver outcomes supported by a strong skillset across content creation, brand management, communications, planning, coordination, event management and stakeholder management.

In the Principal Advisor, Communications role for Borates you will:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies that align with business objectives across internal and external audiences.

  • Design and execute communication plans, ensuring alignment across internal teams, media, and community stakeholders. Create adaptable content for use across multiple platforms.

  • Lead the creation and execution of integrated stakeholder engagement plans to support project success and mitigate reputational risks.

  • Partner with third-party vendors and internal teams (operations, logistics, commercial, procurement) to drive communication strategies for transformational projects.

  • Collaborate with internal teams to share and maximize content on Rio Tinto Borates social media / website platforms.

  • Support media relations and external communications initiatives to help build and support Rio Tinto's Borates reputation.

  • Create talking points, speeches and media guides for the Senior Leadership Team

  • Develop content and coach leaders to deliver communications with clarity and consistency

  • Help build Rio Tinto's Borates' reputation across the United States and Europe through engaging storytelling and content, including social media posts, videos, web content, etc.

  • Provide brand guidance to operational teams within the business.

  • Serve as a senior leader within the Senior Leadership Team and act as the communications lead for the Business Resilience Team.

What You'll Bring

We're looking for someone who brings:

  • At least five years of broad-based communications experience, with a particular focus on social and digital (knowledge of the mining and metals sector and experience in the corporate world is a plus.)

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism or any other related discipline

  • Excellent writing skills and command of English

  • Willingness and commitment to maintain strong relationships with operational teams and maintain an appropriate level of site presence

  • Ability to prioritize and handle numerous deadlines

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
