Job Summary:

A key player in the Weinberg College Office of Undergraduate Studies and Advising, the Assistant Dean for Academic Standing upholds the academic standards of the Weinberg College degree; manages the Weinberg undergraduate probation and dismissal processes; mentors students with complex challenges to academic standing, collaborating with partners across campus; determines matters of academic standing and enrollment; is a creative, forward-looking individual who advocates for undergraduate student success through policy initiatives as well as one-on-one advising.

This is a full-time position and is eligible for remote work, more information will be discussed during the interview. The target hiring range for this position will be between $98,450 - $138,440 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Leads efforts to ensure the College provides students with individual, timely and fair assistance and advising to maintain satisfactory academic progress while discharging the Dean's office's responsibility to the faculty for maintaining Weinberg academic standards; adjudicates academic leaves of absences, academic dismissals, academic reinstatements, probation, and all other processes and requests relevant to advancement in the degree.
  • Makes decisions, including exceptions and accommodations, concerning individual student academic issues that affect progress toward advancement in the degree; manages efforts related to the academic standing of entering students; convenes the quarterly committee on academic standing to review records of students who are not making satisfactory progress.
  • Serves as a member of the leadership team in the Office of Undergraduate Studies and Advising, and in collaboration with the associate dean, assistant deans, and directors plans, reviews, and/or implements matters concerning student academic performance and progress in Weinberg.
  • Serves as the point person between the Dean of Students office, the Registrar's Office, the Office of Financial Aid, College Advisers, the Undergraduate Enrollment Committee, faculty, and other undergraduate schools for cases involving Weinberg students facing academic standing challenges.
  • Manages the College's portion of holistic, comprehensive support for students withdrawing for medical or academic reasons and/or re-entering after leaves or dismissals; provide both strategic vision and tactical support for students who may need support over and above that provided by the advising office; marshals the data needed to assess the College's efforts in the above areas.
  • Upholds the academic standards of the Weinberg College Arts and Sciences degree; informs and administers faculty-legislated policies concerning academic standards and requirements; leads development and ensures the communication of policies on academic standing and progress with academic departments, advising office, faculty, students, and staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A master's degree in arts and sciences or education; terminal degree in arts and sciences preferred.
  • At least seven years' experience in higher education, especially in undergraduate academic affairs.
  • Familiarity with university academic operations and systems.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a highly collaborative work environment.

  • Excellent communication skills, including written, for a range of internal and external audiences including students, faculty members, Northwestern colleagues, colleagues from other institutions, family members.
  • Ability to work in fast and high stress situations against competing and frequent deadlines.
