Practical Law Senior Specialist Legal Editor

Role Summary:

Practical Law US is looking for a Senior Specialist Legal Editor who has a passion for research and writing on legal topics to create attorney-specific resources for our Capital Markets & Corporate Governance Service. We are looking for someone who has focused their career on capital-raising and organizational matters for startups and small businesses. Our content includes practice notes, checklists, and standard forms, all of which are written in accordance with Practical Law's writing style. This Editor will also work collaboratively on Thomson Reuters' other offerings, particularly in the legal technology space with artificial intelligence (AI), like CoCounsel.

About the Role

In this opportunity as Practical Law Senior Specialist Legal Editor, you will:

  • Write, edit, and update Practical Law know-how and current awareness resources, focusing on legal issues facing startup companies and growing businesses with a focus on capital raising and corporate governance. The resources will address all aspects of venture capital and startup financings including seed, bridge, crowdfunding, Regulation A and Series A/B/C/D financings.
  • Maintain and develop expertise on securities law issues facing startups and small businesses and ensure that Practical Law resources reflect the latest legal and practice developments.
  • Collaborate with other Practical Law Capital Markets editors and other Practical Law services on content planning and priorities, resource production, and peer review.
  • Demonstrate and develop expertise in content and technology tools used to create and publish resources.
  • Collaborate on special projects to provide subject-matter expertise across Thomson Reuters for product development and innovation, including using and developing AI-based legal technology tools.
  • Develop or maintain relationships with lawyers and industry groups to ensure that Practical Law content is topical and meets their needs.
  • Assist with sales demonstrations for new and potential customers and assist with marketing initiatives, like hosting and conducting webinars, as requested; and
  • Support other Thomson Reuters products and initiatives in which Practical Law is foundational, as requested.
  • Support AI initiatives, including training AI for use in products and validating model performance.

About You

You're a fit for the role of Practical Law Senior Specialist Legal Editor, if you have at least the following skills and experience:

  • A JD from an ABA accredited law school and an active license to practice law in at least one US state.
  • A minimum of eight years' experience providing advice on transactional matters to a variety of organizations with a strong focus on representing startups and small business organizations.
  • Strong knowledge of issues relating specifically to organization of startups and small businesses throughout their life cycles.
  • Strong familiarity with issues that impact decisions for startups (such as labor/employment, intellectual property, stock options).
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to balance multiple tasks at once.

Skill and passion for writing, including:

  • close attention to detail;
  • impressive command of grammar, punctuation, and plain English; and
  • the ability to write about complex legal issues clearly and simply.

The ability to collaborate with and support team members.

Flexibility in working on tasks other than writing legal resources, such as:

  • supporting the product development and sales and marketing teams in their efforts to build and market Practical Law;
  • conducting sales demonstrations and webinars on topics of interest for customers, as requested; and
  • responding to subscriber inquiries regarding Practical Law resources.

Candidates selected for a second interview will be required to submit a writing sample.

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The base compensation range varies across locations.
Eligible office location(s) for this role include one or more of the following: New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and/or Irvine, CA; McLean, VA; Washington, DC. The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $134,680 - $250,120.
This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance.
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.
