Position Description:
Every great life-changing discovery begins the same way-with new knowledge. It can change everything, from a single life to the future of entire communities. That's why academic medicine, and the continuous pursuit of knowledge, is at the center of everything we do at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). In the role of a Research Technologst I you will be working in our Biophysics Department.
Position Description
The Wang Lab in the Department of Biophysics at the Medical College of Wisconsin is seeking a Research Technologist I to join our team. Our lab is broadly focused on understanding the relationship between RNA structure and function, with the ultimate goal of uncovering the molecular mechanisms that drive RNA activity and informing the development of novel RNA-targeted therapeutics for cancer and related diseases.
Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the successful candidate will contribute to ongoing research projects, assist with day-to-day lab operations, and help support collaborations within and beyond the department. Opportunities for independent research may be available for candidates who demonstrate proficiency in routine experimental techniques and display strong skills in communication, data recording, initiative, and time management.
This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in RNA biology, structural biology, drug discovery, or preparing for graduate or professional studies. While a background in biochemistry is preferred, it is not required for a strong candidate.
Primary Responsibilities
- Prepare RNA samples via in vitro transcription, purification, and quality control (e.g., PAGE, UV spectroscopy)
- Conduct molecular biology and biochemistry techniques such as cloning, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and EMSAs
- Assist with biochemical and biophysical assays related to RNA structure and function
- Help set up, operate, and maintain instruments used in RNA structural biology research
- Support laboratory setup and purchasing, including identifying vendors, placing orders, and coordinating equipment installation
- Maintain organized, detailed records of experiments, protocols, and sample inventories
- Prepare buffers, reagents, and media; manage supply inventory and maintain general lab organization
- Assist in data collection, analysis, and figure generation for presentations or publications
- Participate in lab meetings and collaborate effectively with other team members
Preferred Schedule:
Monday - Friday 8:00-5:00
Position Requirements:
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related life science field
- Minimum of one year of laboratory experience in an academic or industry setting (undergraduate research experience is acceptable)
- Proficiency in standard molecular biology and biochemical techniques
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to follow protocols accurately
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with RNA or nucleic acid handling
- Familiarity with in vitro transcription, RNA purification, or RNA structural probing techniques
- Exposure to structural biology tools such as NMR, X-ray crystallography, or cryo-EM
- Interest in long-term research involvement or future graduate study in structural biology or drug discovery
