Position Summary
This position involves the production of a dependable supply of healthy appropriately aged plants (cotton, collards, tomato, squash) for use in bioassays and to maintain insect (whitefly and diamondback moth) colonies. This involves planning in anticipation of needs extending a month or more into the future.

The incumbent will provide assistance with the maintenance of laboratory and field colonies of whiteflies (three lab and four field colonies) and diamondback moth (one lab and four field colonies). Coordination with lab personnel will be essential to ensure sufficient insect numbers are available to conduct experiments and maintain the insect lines.

The position will assist graduate students and Drs. Champagne and Hua in conducting bioassays to determine susceptibility or resistance of whitefly and diamondback moth colonies to a variety of insecticides.

  • Knowledge of bioassay techniques

Physical Demands

  • Transporting soil, planting, and moving trays of plant seedings between greenhouse benches
  • Watering, including pulling a heavy hose around the greenhouse
  • Washing/disinfecting insect cages and other equipment
  • Driving as needed to perform job duties

This includes transferring insects from aged plants to fresh plants frequently, ensuring honey water is available for the diamondback moths, watering plants in the insect cages, and disposing of old plants without allowing release of insects. This also involves disinfecting insect cages between uses.
