The Position

The City

The Department

The Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department is nationally accredited (and one of only five agencies in the State of California) by the Commission for the Accreditation of Parks & Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). The department is the steward of approximately 450 acres of parkland, featuring community and historic parks, senior services, playgrounds, multigenerational facilities, aquatic centers, tennis courts, and multi-use fields. Nearly 40 percent of the city is dedicated open space, and the department maintains approximately 40 linear miles of recreational trails. The Position:

The Kitchen Aide is a Recreation Leader-level position that supports the Senior Nutrition Program at the Carlsbad Senior Center. This role requires the ability to perform a variety of assigned duties independently, exercise sound judgment, and adapt to changing situations. Under the guidance of the Recreation Supervisor and Kitchen Coordinator, the Kitchen Aide helps ensure safe, efficient meal service for older adults by maintaining cleanliness, supporting food service operations, and following proper safety and sanitation procedures. Ideal candidates will have experience in food service or hospitality, a strong understanding of basic cleaning practices, and the ability to follow chemical safety protocols. Familiarity with senior nutrition or community meal programs is a plus.

Scheduled hours are primarily Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with occasional flexibility based on program needs.

The most qualified candidates will be granted an interview.

*** Part-time employees cannot exceed 980 total hours worked within on fiscal year.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary kitchen environment in compliance with food and health safety regulations
  • Operate commercial dishwasher daily to wash and sanitize dishes, trays, pots, pans, utensils, and kitchen equipment
  • Clean and disinfect kitchen surfaces, carts, food carriers, and storage areas throughout each shift
  • Clean and disinfect dining room surfaces, tables, and chairs throughout each shift
  • Operate and assist with the cleaning of kitchen appliances (e.g., stove, oven, microwave, steam table, coffee maker, refrigerator/freezer, ice machine, washer/dryer)
  • Support daily meal service by assisting with plating, serving, and clearing lunch
  • Effectively communicate inventory needs, equipment issues, and task completion to the Kitchen Coordinator
  • Follow written and verbal instructions with attention to detail
  • Keep basic records
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Must meet State of California Tuberculosis test requirements
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, County of San Diego Food Handler's certification
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR and first aid certification
  • Knowledge of food service practices
  • Experience working with seniors preferred

Experience & Education

Any combination of experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities will be considered.

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid California Class C Driver's License

Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, reach
  • Be able to lift 50 pounds
  • May be exposed to various weather conditions and occasional loud or unexpected noises in the kitchen or surrounding facility.
