Apparatus Groundman Trainee

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative has an immediate opening for an Apparatus Groundman Trainee in Hughesville, Maryland. The primary functions of this position are to learn the skills and duties of the Apparatus Groundman. Provide efficient performance of ground skills and labor in general repair, maintenance, and construction of the cooperative substation and transmission facilities. This position pays $21.10 per hour.

This position requires a candidate to perform general grounds maintenance, including repairing fences, gates, yards, roads, and clearing debris. The candidate may also clear snow and ice from right of ways, substations, and switching stations. Cuts grass, brush, prunes trees, and shrubs. Apply herbicides for vegetation control under proper supervision.

The candidate must have the ability to learn and follow instructions to support apparatus construction, load and unload material needed for daily assigned jobs, set out traffic signs, flag traffic, SMECO safety rules, and general apparatus maintenance. The candidate will also drive full-size commercial vehicles and trailers, including tractors, lawn mowers, chippers, chain saws, and maintenance equipment.

No experience is required. A high school diploma or the equivalent is required. Must hold a valid Maryland Driver's License, Commercial Driver's License, Class A, and a Department of Transportation Medical Examiners Certificate. Must have the physical ability to perform the essential functions, duties and responsibilities of the job which include, but are not limited to, climbing ladders, bending, pulling/pushing, digging, lifting and carrying loads averaging 80 pounds.
