Job Overview

The Packaging Engineer will be responsible for optimizing the packaging program for direct to consumer and business to business shipments for Macy's Supply Chain and Stores. Responsibilities include designing, developing, and optimizing packaging solutions and containers that ensure product integrity, minimize damage, reduce shipping costs, and enhance the customer's unboxing experience within a high-volume, direct-to-consumer fulfillment network. This role requires a strong understanding of packaging materials, supply chain operations, and logistics, with an eye for innovation and sustainability. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment and be adept at collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver impactful packaging solutions.

What You Will Do



  • Cost Optimization & Efficiency:

    • Identify and implement opportunities to optimize packaging material usage, reduce waste, and decrease overall packaging and shipping costs without compromising product protection or customer experience.
    • Analyze fulfillment center processes to identify bottlenecks and optimize packaging designs for automated packing lines and efficient handling.
    • Partner with operations for successful processes and strategies to execute optimal packaging solutions.

  • Design, Development & Test

    • Design and develop innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable packaging solutions for a wide range of products, considering product fragility, dimensions, weight, and shipping methods (e.g., parcel, freight).
    • Develop and execute comprehensive packaging test plans (e.g., ISTA protocols, drop tests, vibration tests, compression tests) to validate packaging performance and ensure product protection during transit.

  • Collaboration

    • Partner with operational vice presidents and facility leaders to collectively solve issues and implement new initiatives.
    • Collaborate with procurement and suppliers to source innovative and cost-effective packaging materials and technologies.

  • Sustainability & Compliance:

    • Implement sustainable packaging alternatives (e.g., recyclable, compostable, recycled content materials) to support company environmental goals.
    • Ensure all packaging designs comply with relevant industry standards, regulations, and customer safety requirements.

  • Continuous Improvement & Innovation:

    • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging packaging technologies, and best practices in DTC packaging and logistics.
    • Proactively identify and champion new packaging initiatives that enhance customer experience, improve efficiency, and support business growth.
    • Contribute to the development of packaging guidelines and standards for the organization.

  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.

Skills You Will Need

Leadership: Ability to plan and lead projects effectively, ensuring smooth transition and rollout.

Communication: Ability to effectively communicate initiative and objectives and clearly articulate expected outcomes and benefits.

Collaboration: Proficiency in collaborating with operations, transportation, procurement and other functions to align and drive initiatives.

Analytical Skills: Strong analytical skills to leverage data and analytics to identify opportunities for cost reduction and performance improvement.

Performance Management: Ability to manage facility performance and adherence to packaging program standards.

Financial Acumen: Understanding of finance principles to partner with finance on determining and forecasting future cost reductions.

Problem-Solving Skills: Capability to solve problems efficiently and address issues directly as they arise, maintaining operational effectiveness.

Who You Are



  • Candidates with a Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in Packaging Engineering are encouraged to apply. 5-10 years' experience in Supply Chain, Direct to Consumer Operations
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule occasionally as required.
  • Travel required: 25%
