About the Position

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) is seeking a Certified Pharmacy Technician to support its clinics within Maricopa County. The pharmacy technician supports MCDPH clinics by accurately and efficiently preparing medications and supporting the pharmacist according to the regulations and standards set forth by state statute and the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy.

MCDPH often provides services to clients with limited access to medical care. In this position, the pharmacy technician will be able to make a positive impact on their community by providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external clients in a friendly and professional clinic setting.

The primary work site for this position is the Public Health Clinic located at 1645 E Roosevelt St. in Phoenix, AZ. Candidates applying for this position must also have the ability to work at MCDPH's Glendale pharmacy location, located at 5141 W. Lamar Rd., based on staffing needs. Candidates may be required to deliver repackaged medications to satellite clinic sites in Mesa and Goodyear should the need arise. Mileage reimbursement is available.

Clinic hours are Monday-Friday 8-5, but may vary slightly based on clinic needs. The pharmacy is closed on weekends and holidays and only serves clients seen within the clinic.

We Require

  • A valid, unrestricted Pharmacy Technician license issued by the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy.

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Completion of an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)-certified Pharmacy Technician program

  • Paid experience working as a licensed Pharmacy Technician in a retail, wholesale, or long-term care setting

  • Paid experience working with an electronic pharmacy program (such as Pioneer Rx) used for receiving prescription orders, dispensing medications, managing inventory, and preparing labels

Job Contributions

  • Prepares and organizes medications for pharmacist to perform quality assurance by accurately reading, verifying, and following medication orders and prescriptions, preparing prescription labels and calculating medication quantities

  • Prepares and organizes repackaged medications for pharmacist to perform quality assurance

  • Enters information into electronic pharmacy systems used for inventory, dispensing, and packaging of medications

  • Prepares unit dose, directly observed therapy medication packs for active tuberculosis patients

  • Prepares and manages clinic stock orders, including repackaged medications for alternate site locations

  • Transports repackaged medications between clinic sites within Maricopa County

  • Maintains, orders, labels, and stocks pharmaceuticals and supplies used by the pharmacy

  • Maintains an appropriate inventory of medicines and supplies

  • Assists other departments and medical providers with special order requests, including price checks and verifying product availability

  • Completes accurate and thorough quality control checks of pharmacy inventory and properly disposes of outdated products

  • Maintains medication inventory for Mobile Health Unit (MHU)

  • Monitors contract pricing and ensures the most cost-effective products are being ordered

  • Maintains medication inventory of various clinics within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health umbrella.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions

  • Participate in outbreak response activities

  • Ability to exert up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly and requires walking/standing to a significant degree

  • Valid Arizona driver's license is required upon hire

  • Within one month of hire, all employees will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test

  • Must secure and maintain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Level 1 Fingerprint Clearence Card and complete background check
