ACCESSIBILITY INSPECTOR

MAYOR'S OFFICE for PEOPLE with DISABILITIES

Accessibility Compliance Unit

Number of Positions: 1

(Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

Starting Salary: $83,052

The Accessibility Inspector for the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities will inspect, evaluate, and report on accessibility compliances of public, private, and government-owned buildings. The Accessibility Inspector will work within the Accessibility Compliance Unit team and under direct supervision of a Deputy Commissioner. They will be required to observe and document accessibility architectural barriers and interpret various provisions of the Chicago Building Code, Illinois Accessibility Code, and federal ADA Standards

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

* Inspects the interior and exterior of multifamily residential and commercial buildings to ensure compliance with accessibility code requirements.

* Reviews building plans and specifications to ensure compliance with accessibility code requirements.

* Recommends changes to bring facilities into compliance with accessibility code requirements.

* Works with relevant city departments to develop accessibility assessment surveys for different building occupancies.

* Accompanies inspectors from the Department of Housing in the field to ensure dwelling units funded under the City of Chicago's affordable housing program continue to meet accessibility requirements.

* Conducts accessibility surveys and assessments necessary to update and maintain the City's ADA Title II Transition Plan.

* Conducts accessibility compliance surveys (i.e., photographing defects, taking measurements, using a level) of privately and publicly funded housing and commercial facilities.

* Inspects structures to ensure compliance with appropriate ordinances, federal, local, state accessibility laws.

* Documents survey findings and prepares reports.

* Interprets and explains applicable sections of federal, state and local accessibility code requirements to contractors, developers and members of the public.

* Stays abreast of applicable sections of federal, state, and local accessibility code requirements.

* Responds to complaints and inquiries regarding inspections and permits.

* Testifies at administrative hearings and in court regarding code violations and corresponding citations issued.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training, and Experience

* Seven (7) years of work experience in conducting accessibility compliance inspections and surveys, OR

* Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate's degree in Architecture, Construction Management, or Construction-related Engineering, PLUS at least five (5) years of work experience in conducting accessibility compliance inspections and surveys OR

* Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Construction Management, or Construction-related Engineering, PLUS at least three (3) years of work experience in conducting accessibility compliance inspections and surveys, OR

* Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree or higher in Architecture, Construction Management, or Construction-related Engineering, PLUS at least two (2) years of work experience in conducting accessibility compliance inspections and surveys.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position based on the oral parts of the interview will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

* Basic Knowledge of the Chicago Building Code, Federal ADA Standards, and Illinois Accessibility Code.

* ICC Certified Accessibility Inspector/ Plans Examiner

* Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook.

* Previous experience preparing written ADA compliance reports.

* Previous experience in reading architectural plans.

* Previous experience with basic surveying and using measuring tools and equipment (smart level, measuring tape)

* Previous experience working on a team and with architects, engineers, builders, and/or inspectors.
