Job Title: Director, Data & Measurement (Non-Union) Status: Full-Time
Department: Information Technology Grade: Management

SUMMARY

This role provides technical leadership, operational direction and strategic vision for United Way's high-performing Data & Measurement team, driving cross-departmental decision-making and expanding data-informed practices at the organization. The Director, Data & Measurement translates complex data into actionable strategies that advance fundraising, community impact, and organizational strategic goals.

TEAM STRATEGY & LEADERSHIP

  • Manage cross-functional data team; organize staff and resources to meet organizational goals and priorities
  • Support staff development through coaching, feedback, and performance conversations. Identify opportunities for team members to obtain updated skills or competencies and implement learning plans
  • Promote team coordination and communication, including by facilitating purposeful team meetings and overseeing team workplans


  • Understand internal processes conducted by direct reports, ensure processes are appropriately documented
  • Develop internal team processes and procedures to optimize creation of deliverables
  • Maintain an excellent team climate rooted in high expectations, an appreciation for team diversity, and a commitment to create an inclusive and collaborative team environment


ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE & INVESTMENT IMPACT MEASUREMENT

  • Establish strong cross-departmental relationships through regular data touchpoints with the Senior Team, Management Team, and other key stakeholders, creating and sharing high-quality visualizations, reports and presentations
  • Responsible for measuring and monitoring United Way's strategic plan goals, including:

    • Analyze & present meaningful data to support VPs in identifying high impact objectives and strategies
    • Develop ambitious but realistic goal metrics
    • Create departmental and systems infrastructure to collect data to measure goal progress
    • Measure effectiveness of goal strategies, to inform future strategies


  • Responsible for measurement and evaluation of United Way Key Initiatives (funding priorities), including:

    • Research on and analysis of potential new Key Initiatives
    • Analyze & present meaningful data to support creation of realistic community-wide Key Initiative impact goals
    • Lead measurement of the effectiveness of investments
    • Develop measurement infrastructure to inform and investment decision-making
    • Develop & implement Key Initiative nonprofit evaluation infrastructure


  • Responsible for leadership and oversight of Resource Development (fundraising) goal measurement and strategy analysis, including:

    • Analyzing donor and giving trends to inform strategy and identify opportunities for growth
    • Evaluate the return on investment (ROI) of various fundraising channels (e.g., direct mail, digital, newsletter, events) and donor touchpoints


  • Collect and analyze demographic, outcome and impact data for funded nonprofits
  • Oversee the intake, prioritization, and completion of internal and external data requests
  • Support creation of key performance indicator dashboards to support departmental operational monitoring
  • Collaborate with Marketing & Communications to produce data-driven content-such as community statistics, goal updates, and impact highlights-for use in donor and public-facing communications, including: webpages, targeted donor emails, community newsletters and Annual Report
  • Responsible for the creation, maintenance and improvement of the United Way Board Dashboard and Board Committee Dashboards



DATA ARCHITECTURE & STANDARDS MANAGEMENT

  • Lead identification and implementation of any opportunities to modify data architecture, technical platforms or data quality, to accelerate the processes of data analysis and reporting.


  • Develop guidance and policies to institutionalize high-quality collection, monitoring, evaluation, analysis and reporting
  • Ensure that new tools & technologies incorporate organizational data standards and structures
  • Manage oversight, vendor relationships & backup on key processes for nonprofit-facing survey and grant management data collection software
  • Develop processes and procedures for the creation of consistent, up-to-date, accessible impact and donor data for use by communication, marketing, community impact and resource development teams
  • Create data sharing agreements for use of 3rd party data sets or external data partners
  • Ensure organizational data and information security by upholding security and confidentiality policies and suggesting areas for improvements



ORGANIZATIONAL LEARNING & BEST PRACTICES

  • Contribute to thought leadership by partnering with key stakeholders to learn about fundraising and impact best practices at different organizations; provide recommendations and insights to help shape strategic objectives
  • Keep track of current trends in data architecture, collection, analysis and visualization to continually improve our organizational processes
  • Contribute to data-informed continuous quality improvement and a culture of evaluative thinking across the organization.
  • Lead efforts to embed practices that normalize measurement and learning into organizational routines at all levels of the organization



SKILLS, EDUCATION & COMPETENCIES

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • 5+ years experience leading and developing highly effective cross-functional teams
  • Ability to collect, interpret and analyze large amounts of data to create actionable reports and user-friendly visualizations for key stakeholders
  • Technical competencies:

    • Advanced Excel skills
    • Advanced skills in PowerBI skills, or similar data visualization tool
    • Experience with or ability to learn SQL
    • Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, and PowerPoint
    • Experience with Andar CRM or other donor database platform
    • Experience with e-Cimpact or other grant management software
    • Experience with of i-CResults or other survey software used to collect program outcomes data


  • In-depth understanding of modern database and information technologies; developing organizational data architecture; implementing organizational data standards and quality assurance
  • Knowledge of nonprofit evaluation practices, outcomes evaluation or performance monitoring
  • Ability to translate complex problems using non-technical terms to multiple audiences & stakeholders
  • Excellent report-writing and presentation skills
  • Excellent math, problem-solving, quantitative and analytical skills
  • Experience working with and creating dashboards using all relevant data to inform decisions.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills; ability to foster relationships with staff across departments and collaborate with diverse stakeholders
  • Experience using analytics techniques to contribute to organizational growth efforts, i.e. increasing fundraising, achieving community impact goals or other key business outcomes.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage/supervise Data & Measurement team. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring or effectively recommending hiring, and training support staff; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance and coaching; discipline employees; handling and resolving complaints and employee relations problems.
