Role of the Sustainability Program Manager

Manages Recology's sustainability strategy and Waste Zero programs. This is a hybrid role.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Leads the development, execution, and continuous improvement of Recology's enterprise-wide sustainability strategy in alignment with company goals and values.
  • Manages sustainability planning processes, including materiality assessments, goal setting, and program roadmaps.
  • Guides the Sustainability Working Groups and provides updates to the Sustainability Steering Committee.
  • Tracks, analyzes, and reports on sustainability performance metrics, including greenhouse gas emissions and waste diversion.
  • Oversees the preparation of Recology's annual greenhouse gas emissions inventory.
  • Manages internal and external reporting efforts, including the annual sustainability report, ESG disclosures (SASB, TCFD), customer sustainability requests, the sustainability dashboard, and other communications.
  • Oversees and provides guidance and direction to local Waste Zero teams to identify strategic priorities and initiatives for education, outreach, and diversion programs.
  • Develops and maintains consistent standards, tools/resources, and training to ensure high-impact, mission-aligned Waste Zero programming and reporting.
  • Supports integration of Waste Zero initiatives with broader sustainability goals and customer partnerships.
  • Serves as a key internal resource for sustainability-related guidance across departments.
  • Collaborates with Government Affairs to respond to and shape policy and regulatory developments related to sustainability and resource recovery.
  • Travels to Recology Operating companies as needed.
  • Performs other sustainability-related project support and administration.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • 6+ years of experience in sustainability, environmental programs, or related field; waste/recycling industry experience preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in sustainability, environmental science, public policy, business or related field, preferred.
  • Strong program or project management skills, with a proven track record of implementing initiatives from concept to completion across cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work across all levels of the organization and with external partners.
  • Experience with sustainability metrics, reporting frameworks (e.g., GHG Protocol, The Climate Registry, SASB, TCFD), and data management tools.
  • Experience with waste, recycling, composting, or circular economy systems.
  • Experience managing or supporting frontline program teams (e.g., community engagement, education, technical assistance).
  • Knowledge of West Coast waste and climate-related policies preferred.
  • Ability to foster teamwork and build collaborative relationships.
  • Experience working with financial data a plus.
  • Principles of employee training, supervision, and evaluation.
  • Supervisory techniques, resource allocation, planning, and budgeting.
