Temporary Catering Cook - Limited Hour

Job Summary:

A Much Ado Catering Cook is a skilled and passionate cook with hands-on experience in preparing a variety of cuisines. Adept at maintaining kitchen efficiency, ensuring food safety standards, and delivering high-quality dishes. Committed to teamwork, creativity, and consistently satisfying customer tastes. The Catering Cook reports directly to the Catering Chef.

Much Ado Catering is the Catering Department under Davidson Dining Services. This is a 12-month on-call position receiving a maximum of 500 hours per year. During the academic year, our dining locations operate seven days a week serving three meals a day for the students, guests, staff, and faculty of Davidson College. This position is a part of the Davidson Dining Services Department and may require cross departmental assistance in another dining location outside of catering.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Food Preparation



  • Prepares high-quality food items according to standardized recipes and instructions to meet production, delivery, and service schedules.
  • Prepares for delivery by using correct portioning, meeting outlined standards, ensuring that food is at the correct temperature and is attractive and tasty.
  • Tastes all prepared food items.
  • Perform clean-up of the kitchen which includes sweeping, mopping, and taking trash to the dumpster.


2. Safety:



  • Stores or discards excess food in accordance with safe food-handling procedures.
  • Ensures food and supply items are stored per standards.
  • Operates and maintains kitchen equipment as instructed, reports needed maintenance, faulty equipment, or accidents to the supervisor immediately.
  • Assist with proper storage of foods according to health code policy.


3. Customer Interaction:



  • Provide excellent customer service to clients and guests.
  • Communicate effectively with the onsite host and guests when customer facing to understand their preferences and needs that may arise.
  • Deliver exceptional food and service tailored to individual client's needs.


4. Team Collaboration:



  • Work closely with other catering staff and kitchen personnel to accomplish a common goal.
  • Follow instructions from the Catering Chef and Catering Director.


5. Policy and Procedures:



  • Ability to maintain and uphold the policies and procedures of Much Ado Catering and Davidson Dining Services.
  • Policies including but not limited to dress code, personal hygiene, safety standards, allergen policy, attendance, and all others identified in the employee handbook
  • Must complete all required trainings assigned to the position
  • A Much Ado Catering Associate is a direct representative of the department and must conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.



Qualifications:



  • Minimum 1 year experience in a fast-paced kitchen able to produce hot and cold food.
  • Skilled in batch cooking while maintaining high quality standards
  • Knowledge of safe food handling practices and ensure compliance with state health guidelines.
  • Food handler certified or ability to get certified in 30 days.
  • Allertrain lite certified or ability to get certified in 30 days.
  • Ability to read and understand recipes and measurements.
  • Knowledge of various cooking techniques.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • To know how to utilize kitchen equipment and cleaning equipment.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • This role has physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, carrying and / or extended walking and standing.
  • A valid Driver's Licenses and Ability to Drive Catering Vehicles



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Vocational or technical training in Culinary Arts preferred.



Physical Requirements:



  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks with a high level of accuracy.



Working Conditions:

*Work is performed in various environments, including kitchens, event venues, and outdoor locations.

*May involve exposure to hot and cold temperatures, sharp equipment, and slippery surfaces.
