Position Summary:

This exempt, lone worker field position will support the prevention, detection and identification of lost revenue in complex and/or sensitive cases. The incumbent will perform duties in support of this initiative through the analysis of information and the inspection of facilities. In addition, appropriate action will be taken to ensure safety as well as good customer relations. Incumbents are expected to be self-driven and can work with a high degree of independence. This position's area of responsibility will include all of Duke Energy's service territory in Western NC.

Responsibilities:

The Revenue Assurance Investigator is a Hands -on, customer facing field worker. The Revenue Assurance Investigator will energize or de-energize electrical service meters and remove diversion devices as required, utilizing all companies provided personal protective equipment and following all company safety rules. The Revenue Assurance Investigator will have a large coverage area from 8-15 counites and could drive hundreds of miles per week depending on business needs.

  • Inspect gas and electric service meters for tamper or diversions.

  • Drive a company provided vehicle and obey all safety rules and traffic laws.

  • Collect/document information and analyze to resolve sensitive and/or complex service diversion cases

  • Coordinate activities and programs with internal Duke Energy organizations and external agencies to include enterprise security, law enforcement and district attorney representatives when appropriate

  • Represent the Company in hearings and court trials concerning theft of service cases as needed

  • Communicate with customers as needed to resolve problems and negotiate settlement/payment of estimated revenues

  • Analyze customer account data and demographics

  • Prioritize cases by revenue potential

  • Support staff as needed to maintain current information

  • Ensure accuracy of performance and status reports

  • Provide support and training to other organizations (L&S, Meter Reading, Meter Operations, AMI Operations, etc.) as needed regarding energy diversion

  • Perform billing calculations/estimations.

  • Conduct field test, evaluate meter equipment accuracy and inspect meter for irregularities and potential meter tampering

  • Maintain accurate account documentation of all customer contacts that are comprehensive in nature and easy to understand

  • Process correspondences that are related to assigned duties and responsibilities

  • Assist internal customers with the resolution of billing issues

  • Work to achieve team goals and deliverables

  • Review, analyze, develop, monitor and implement work process changes to ensure energy theft procedures are efficient and existing processes are in compliance with the corporate directive

Required/Basic Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Electrical System and Technology

  • In lieu of Associate's degree(s) listed above, High School/GED AND four (4) or more years related work experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong understanding of electricity distribution and metering. Hands on applications such as checking voltage with a Fluke meter, verifying source of feed, verifying load side voltage.

  • Possess a valid state driver's license and operate a motor vehicle

  • Must be able to work around energized circuits at service voltages, in varied terrain and under all environmental conditions with no direct supervision

  • Possess the ability to plan, organize, and coordinate assigned duties in such a manner as to make the most effective use of time and budgets

  • Maintain an acceptable appearance and wear appropriate safety clothing and footwear when performing job

  • Perform all duties and responsibilities with consideration for the safety of others and within Duke Energy and OSHA guidelines and regulations

  • Possess strong interpersonal skills:

  • Able to work well with others, foster positive relationships and teamwork

  • Participate in the development of meter reading employees by monitoring, training, providing feedback and seeking ways to improve overall work processes and customer satisfaction levels

  • Possess a basic working knowledge of the office geographical service area

  • Accurately read all types of Company meters

  • Understands competitive forces facing the Company and recognizes/responds to opportunities to improve the Company's competitive position

  • Establishes priorities, coordinates work activities, and meets deadlines with quality results

  • Is willing to learn; flexible to travel the system on a moments notice, receptive and adaptable to changing situations

  • Must be self-motivated to perform work independently with remote supervision

  • Ability to perform mathematics required to estimate billings for the recovery of unmetered electrical usage

  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to operate transformer or meter test equipment and take voltage and amperage readings

  • Knowledge of electrical service and customer service policies and programs to resolve metering problems and/or theft of service issues

  • Must be able to communicate effectively and conduct interviews with customers

  • Knowledge of customer systems to access and review customer records

  • Proficiency with all software in Microsoft Office

  • Must adhere to all OSHA and Duke Energy Safety Regulations

  • Flexible and receptive to change, adaptable to changing situations

  • Must be able to effectively balance multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Oral communication skills; speaking clearly and professionally to internal and external customers.

Working Conditions
  • Field Mobility Classification - Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.

  • Frequent outside work in various weather conditions, often in undesirable neighborhoods, in isolated areas such as back alleys or behind apartment buildings

  • Exempt position, may work odd hours (investigations, ongoing surveillance, etc.) to meet business needs.

  • Frequently access occupied customer premises to inspect metering equipment, lines, and facilities suspected of illegal activity and or un-metered conditions.
