Job Description Summary
The Men's Rugby Head Coach directs all facets of Nazareth University's NCAA Division III program, with primary responsibility for student-athlete development, competitive success, and full compliance with NCAA, conference, and institutional policies. Key duties include strategic planning, daily coaching, recruiting, budget oversight, and alumni engagement, all while advancing the University's mission of excellence, inclusion, and civic engagement.
Essential Functions
Practice & Game Preparation

  • Design and administer daily, weekly, and seasonal practice plans that foster individual skill growth and team success.
  • Scout opponents, develop game strategies, and manage in-game decisions.


NCAA & Institutional Compliance

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all NCAA Division III, Empire Eight (or applicable conference), and Nazareth regulations.
  • Prepare required compliance forms and reports and ensure staff adherence.

Recruitment & Retention

  • Identify, evaluate, and recruit student-athletes who meet academic and athletic standards.
  • Build a diverse roster and monitor academic progress, connecting athletes with campus resources when needed.

Program Administration

  • Develop competitive schedules within the approved budget.
  • Oversee equipment, facilities, travel planning, and day-to-day logistics.

Staff & Student Supervision
  • Hire, train, and evaluate assistant coaches, graduate assistants, and student staff for fall and spring game operations.
Budget, Fund-Raising & Alumni Relations

  • Prepare and manage the program budget.
  • Coordinate fund-raising efforts and cultivate relationships with alumni and donors.

Campus & Community Engagement
  • Serve as a visible ambassador for [Sport], partnering with campus offices on outreach, clinics, and community service.
Other Duties

  • Contribute to departmental game-management coverage for other fall and spring sports.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Required Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum five (5) years of coaching experience, including significant recruiting responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of NCAA rules and sport-specific best practices
  • Advanced knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
  • Valid driver's license meeting University driving standards
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or ability to obtain promptly)
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills; proficiency with technology used in recruiting and coaching

Preferred Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills

  • Master's Degree
  • Prior collegiate head-coaching experience
  • Proven success recruiting at the Division III level

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Direct oversight of assistant and graduate assistant coaches, volunteer staff, and student workers assigned to event operations
Physical Requirements

  • Ability to demonstrate sport-specific skills during practice sessions
  • Travel frequently, including evenings and weekends, throughout the competitive season
