Lead Information Security Engineer
American Public Education, Inc.

As a Lead Security Engineer, you will play a crucial role in safeguarding our organization's digital assets and ensuring the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of our information systems. Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), you will lead a dynamic team of security professionals, driving the development and implementation of robust security measures to protect against potential cyber threats and vulnerabilities.

Responsibilities:



  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and implement a comprehensive security strategy aligned with business objectives. Identify and prioritize security initiatives to enhance the overall security posture of the organization.
  • Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a team of security professionals, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning. Provide guidance and support for skill development, ensuring the team remains well-equipped to address evolving security challenges.
  • Security Architecture: Design, implement, and maintain security architectures, systems, and processes to safeguard sensitive information. Evaluate and recommend security technologies to enhance the organization's resilience against emerging threats.
  • Incident Response: Develop and maintain incident response plans and lead the team in responding to and mitigating security incidents. Conduct post-incident analysis to improve future response capabilities.
  • Security Awareness: Promote a culture of security awareness throughout the organization. Conduct training sessions and awareness programs to educate employees on security best practices and foster a security-conscious mindset.
  • Risk Management: Conduct risk assessments, identify potential vulnerabilities, and implement measures to mitigate risks. Regularly assess the security landscape and adjust security strategies accordingly.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory requirements and industry standards. Stay abreast of changes in the regulatory environment and implement necessary adjustments to maintain compliance.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including IT, development, and operations, to integrate security into the organization's technology stack. Collaborate with external security partners and vendors when necessary.
  • Security Testing: Oversee and conduct regular security assessments, penetration testing, and vulnerability assessments. Translate findings into actionable recommendations for improvement.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay current on industry trends, emerging threats, and security technologies. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the overall effectiveness of the security program.


Requirements:



  • 7-10 years of relevant experience in the field of information security
  • Proven experience in a senior security role focusing on leadership and strategy.
  • Strong knowledge of security frameworks, standards, and best practices (ISO 27001, NIST, CIS).
  • Experience with security technologies, including firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, endpoint protection, etc.
  • Familiarity with cloud security principles and technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Relevant certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or similar are highly desirable.
