Primary Purpose:
This position integrates meteorological data to provide continuously updated weather information to manage the impacts of weather on the electric system and identify vulnerabilities. Update and analyze operational forecast products. Support operational clients with emphasis on short-range prediction. Support projects and development of analytical tools. Maintain and enhance procedures for monitoring and alerting. Assist in real-time/operational forecast process improvements. Prepare and update documentation and training material for Red Flag Warning and Storm procedures. Provide daily weather reports and fire potential forecasts to company personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Monitors, analyzes and reports to senior management real time weather conditions and expected forecasts on an hourly basis during Red Flag Warning and storm events. Prepares and disseminates daily operational weather forecasts, including daily weather reports and fire weather outlooks, year-round based upon defined criteria. Maintains situational awareness at all times regarding current and expected weather conditions. Completes weekly weather outlooks during the defined summer season to allow preparedness and proactive resource availability in the case of pending severe weather. Prepares and disseminates non-routine operational weather reports prior to and during significant weather events, including Santa Ana winds, winter storms, heat waves, and thunderstorm outbreaks. Supports emergency response during significant fire weather and storm events. Prepares and disseminates detailed wind and weather hazard forecasts prior to significant weather events. Provides real-time and forecast weather information during Emergency Operations Center activations as requested.
  • Oversees SDG&E weather products, including the Fire Potential Index and Santa Ana Wildfire Threat Index. Responsible for QA/QC and product integrity.
  • Utilizes various information sources and atmospheric outlook models to develop short and long-term seasonal weather forecasts to allow preparedness and proactive resource availability. Prepares and develops information relating to temperature predictions, precipitation likelihood and potential long-range atmospheric conditions. Responds to internal weather-related data requests.
  • Performs quality assurance and quality control on weather network and various SDG&E Meteorology-owned websites. Works with Operations Support Specialist to coordinate weather station maintenance. Keeps websites up-to-date with real-time and forecast information. Works with external vendors for website maintenance as needed.
  • Travels to remote locations to maintain and inspect company-owned weather stations. Performs field studies as needed to support major projects requests.
  • Serves as a liaison between SDG&E Meteorology and SDG&E Fire Coordination. Represents SDG&E Meteorology at fire agency meetings and conferences.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

Qualifications

Hybrid Schedule:



  • Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow the employee to work onsite three days per week and remotely on the remaining workdays. Effective January 5, 2026, employees who currently follow a three-day, in-office hybrid schedule will shift to four days in the office per week, Monday through Thursday.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.



Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's Degree in Atmospheric science, fire science, environmental sciences or equivalent.
  • 2-4 years of Meteorological operations.
  • Solid computational and statistical skills.
  • Strong forecasting and analytical skills.
  • A good working knowledge of meteorological processes, climatology, forecasting techniques, and weather model analysis.
  • Required skills include good oral, written and personal communication skills.
  • Demonstrate solid interpersonal and communication skills to interact tactfully and constructively with an array of individuals and groups internal and external to the company.
  • Must be proficient in the use of applications and tools (e.g. Word, Access, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, etc.) to provide project management and/or updates and presentations.
  • Ability to review, analyze and recommend improvement to systems, processes and measures of performance.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage time given varying priorities and short deadlines.
  • Ability to assess issues from multiple organizational and functional perspectives and discern an ideal proposal with more optimal results when appropriate.
  • Ability to rapidly develop concise and informative analyses, talking points, visual presentations and one-page memos and other status communications.
  • Ability to conduct ad hoc, cyclical and other technical assessments which provide information on specific topical interests, program plans, performance, and/or requirements.
  • Proficiency in data management skills to efficiently complete studies and visually demonstrate findings that utilize data from disparate sources in various forms.
  • Ability to readily acquire, review and apply relevant literature to interest areas.
  • Rotating 24/7 on-call support. Fire Science & Climate Adaptation operates 24 hours/day, 7 days/week and requires the ability to work rotating shifts as well as weekends and holidays. This position will require significant overtime hours, especially during the typical southern California fire and winter storm seasons.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master's Degree in Atmospheric science, fire science, environmental sciences or equivalent, or Meteorological certificate.
  • Knowledge of weather modeling, python scripting, and/or C++ scripting.
  • 2-4 years of Utility Meteorology experience.
