1st Class Insulator
Purpose:
As an Insulator at Colonna's Shipyard, Inc., you will play a crucial role in the maintenance and repair of marine vessels. You will be responsible for applying insulation materials to various ship components and structures, ensuring optimal thermal and acoustic properties in accordance with industry standards and specifications.
The position is located onsite in Norfolk, VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week with flexible schedule availability to support production/operations. Position may require limited travel.
Job Description:
Key responsibilities include:
- Measure, cut, and install insulation materials on shipboard components such as pipes, boilers, tanks, and bulkheads.
- Interpret drawings, blueprints, and work orders to determine insulation requirements and specifications.
- Select appropriate insulation materials based on temperature, moisture, and other environmental factors.
- Fabricate insulation materials to fit irregular shapes and spaces, ensuring a precise and effective installation.
- Apply insulation using various techniques including taping, stapling, wiring, and cementing.
- Assist in estimating insulation material quantities and labor requirements for project planning and cost estimation purposes.
- Install vapor barriers and weatherproof insulation materials as required.
- Remove and replace damaged or deteriorated insulation materials.
- Perform insulation repairs and maintenance to ensure functionality and longevity.
- Collaborate with other tradespeople and departments to complete projects within specified timelines.
- Conduct inspections and quality checks to verify adherence to insulation standards and regulations.
- Effectively perform work on multiple projects concurrently, demonstrating the ability to prioritize tasks and responsibilities successfully.
- Mentor department employees and other assigned crew members, providing support and training as needed.
Qualifications:
- Must have at least 7 years of experience working as an Insulator, preferably in a shipyard or marine construction environment; or have graduated from a registered apprenticeship program relevant to the trade.
- Must have proficiency in using insulation materials such as fiberglass, mineral wool, foam, and aluminum jacketing.
- Must be able to measure, cut, and fabricate materials for insulation application to overheads, piping, ducts, bulkheads, machinery and equipment to reduce loss or absorption of heat, prevent moisture condensation, and to deaden sound.
- Must have knowledge of insulation techniques, tools, and equipment.
- Must have strong attention to detail and precision in insulation application.
- Must be able to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
Desired Qualifications:
- Previous technical training is highly preferred.
- Previous experience at Colonna's highly preferred.
Security Requirements:
- Must be able to obtain and maintain access to government installation (DBIDS).
Travel Requirements:
- Occasional Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
- Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
- May ride ships at sea for extended periods
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
- Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
- While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
- Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
- Frequent use of respirator.
- Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
