Description

The Tree Care Specialist performs a variety of responsible work assisting with the care of trees and other arboricultural work as required for the City's Parks and Recreation Department. Duties include watering and caring for newly planted trees, and assisting with various arboricultural field tasks. This work is performed under intermediate supervision - the incumbent performs a variety of routine work within established procedures and receives detailed instructions on new projects and assignments; work is reviewed periodically. Work is reviewed through reports, observation of results achieved, and adherence to established policies and procedures.


Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Operate a truck and trailer with water tank.

Water, weed, mulch and prune young trees.

Monitor and maintain supplemental tree watering systems, water basins, staking and strapping on young trees.

Use GIS-based work order and inventory programs to document and track assigned work.

Interact daily with the general public and other city employees.

Respond to callback for emergency work as needed.

Perform other work as assigned.

Demonstrate proficiency in the City of Winter Park Core Competencies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of tree planting and tree care.

Working knowledge of the safe operation and use of a truck and trailer, hand tools, chainsaws, and all other equipment used in division activities.

Working knowledge of occupational hazards, safety rules, and practices.

Working knowledge of traffic direction.

Skill in keeping records, meeting schedules and being adaptable to emergency situations.

Ability to estimate weights and distances.

Ability to travel locally on a daily basis and occasionally travel out-of-area and/or overnight.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors, city officials, and the public.

Ability to communicate information tactfully and impartially, both in person and in writing with all staff, city officials, and the public.

Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the City of Winter Park Core Competencies.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and keep accurate records.

This position is performed with working knowledge - the incumbent has ability to recall and apply important and commonly used information from relevant source documents or information in a particular subject field.


Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or equivalent supplemented by a minimum of three years of experience in relevant positions or other jobs with similar levels of responsibility and overlapping skills.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities, and other competencies required for the position may be considered.

CERTIFICATIONS, TRAINING, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: All certifications must be current at the time of application, and must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.

Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License, Class E or higher.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities and other competencies required for the position may be considered.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Physical

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force repetitively to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping.

Ability to ascend/descend stairs, scaffolds, and ladders.

Ability to traverse about a variety of environments and obstacles throughout the city, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Ability to position oneself to work in confined or difficult to reach spaces.

Ability to manipulate objects, demonstrate small, precise movements, and operate necessary equipment such as small hand and power tools repetitively or continuously.

Environmental

Tasks may require frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather, sun, extreme temperatures, odors, dirt and dust, loud noises, and hazardous chemicals, etc.

Sensory

Tasks require the manipulation of objects and demonstration of small, precise movements, the ability to detect and distinguish various features of one's surroundings, and the ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with others.
