Position Summary

Supports the Infection Prevention and Quality Management Programs. Submits reports of infectious diseases and conditions for the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Systems patients to the Chicago Department of Public Health and the Illinois Department of Public Health. Extracts information from the patient's medical record and interprets findings to supply data specified by the Board of Health within required time frames. Communicates with the Board of Health representatives and other organizations regarding data and follow-up on reportable conditions. Monitors compliance with Infection Prevention processes, tracks Infection Prevention data, maintains databases and analyzes findings.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Complete reports and submit to Board of Health through the INEDSS and CHIMS systems. Access and review lab findings in the electronic medical record to extract, interpret and transcribe required information. Use electronic, manual or verbal routes for report submissions as directed by the Board of Health for specific conditions.
  • Assist in organization of activities within Infection Prevention Department. Answer phones and direct visitors to the department.
  • Respond to questions regarding communicable disease reporting from external agencies such as the Board of Health and outside Hospitals. Maintain confidentiality in all communication.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    1. High school diploma or equivalent.
    2. Any one or combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the categories below:
      1. College coursework in any curriculum, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
        • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
        • Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
        • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
        • Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
      2. Work experience performing office/clerical activities, including the use of computer systems.
    3. One (1) year (12 months) of work experience comparable to the second level of this series.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • 1-year previous healthcare experience preferred
    • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate relationships between healthcare providers including report writing
    • Proactive in anticipating identifying and responding to risks.
    • Ability to examine and critique patient care activities and environments
    • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the use of automated medical record with on-the-job training.
    • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint and Word) preferred
    • Ability to review and interpret clinical data and make judgements regarding appropriate internal follow-up
    • Experience with manipulation and interpretation of large data bases preferred
    • Ability to successfully compete training and apply infection prevention skills accurately and independently
