Examples of Duties

Job Duties

  • Receive and prioritize calls, radio transmissions or requests from the public, Commission staff, OTIC Maintenance personnel, Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), etc. in a timely and effective manner.
  • Operate computer-based dispatch and data entry equipment according to programed instruction and routine. Monitor and operate a multi-channel radio communications system, CCTV system, phone lines and computer aided dispatch (CAD) system.
  • Coordinate and allocate resources for emergency response efforts with Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), OTIC maintenance facilities, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Fire Departments (FD), Disabled Vehicle Services (DVS) upon reports of a vehicular accidents, personal injuries / illnesses, unusual incidents, etc.
  • Relay critical information regarding road closures, severe weather conditions, vehicular accidents, personal injury or illness and any other unusual incidents via the internal communication notifications system set forth by the Safety Operations Supervisor and Safety Manager.
  • Maintain comprehensive radio logs in the Premier 1 CAD system and prepare necessary reports.
  • Report technology, communication and toll equipment breakdowns to the Commission's personnel or maintenance contractor.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Dispatch Coordinator, Safety Operations Supervisor and/or Safety Services Manager.

Typical Qualifications

Education, Experience and Skills

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Valid Class "D" Driver's License.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office package, especially Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Computer-aided dispatch (CAD) experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to type a minimum of 40 wpm with a high level of accuracy.
  • Able to actively listen and distinguish between several radio transmissions at the same time while documenting and retaining information such as names, numbers, and mile posts.
  • Proficient in all forms of communication (reading, writing with the English language).
  • Comfortable working alone and/or with little to no supervision.
  • Willingness to work modified shifts Including Holidays, nights, weekends and overtime as needed.

Unusual Working Conditions

  • Subject to stressful and/or critical incidents (i.e. vehicular accidents, personal injuries/illnesses, unusual incidents, etc.).
  • High regard for attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask and maintain composure in a high-pressure environment, ensuring timely and accurate responses to emergencies.
  • Security and confidentiality of data files is of the highest level of importance.
  • Work involves sitting for prolonged periods of time.

Equipment Unique to this Position

  • Multi-Agency Radio Communication System (MARCS)- OTIC.
  • Premier 1 Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD) Microsoft office package: Outlook, Excel, Word.
  • Web based Portable Changeable Message Board program and VoIP telephone system.
  • CCTV/Milestone Smart Client Video Surveillance System and remote alarm monitoring systems.

Work Locations and Hours of Work

The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission Administration Building, 682 Prospect Street, Berea, OH, 44017. Shifts may vary based on a 24-hour day/7 day a week work schedule. Must be flexible and able to work modified shifts / overtime including nights, weekends and holidays, as necessary pursuant to operational need. Shifts are bid annually based on seniority.
