The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 13B- Represented Professional Research Series- FY. The salary range for this position is $93,400 -$110,400. "Off-scale salaries", i.e. a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Position description

The UCLA Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE) invites applications for a position of Assistant Researcher whose research will focus on Cryospheric State Estimation. The research includes the following activities:

* Develop algorithms and research directions to improve state estimation of polar ice caps (Greenland/Antarctica)

* Calibration/Validation of high performance driven state estimates for Antarctica and Greenland.

* Inclusion of new state estimate approaches into the Ice Sheet and Sea Level System Model (ISSM, issm.jpl.nasa.gov)

* Development of new Machine Learning algorithms towards improved state estimation approaches.

* Calibration of projections of the mass balance of Antarctica and Greenland using state estimates and adjoint approaches.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application):

* Appointee must possess a recent doctorate degree, in the field of engineering, statistics, earth science, or related disciplines.

* Previous training and experience in ISSM, the Ice-Sheet and Sea-Level System Model.

* Extensive knowledge and expertise in adjoint estimation, 4D-VAR, state estimation, data assimilation.

* Extensive knowledge in Matlab, Python, C++ and High Performance Computing.

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
