Carnegie Mellon University seeks a Senior Learning Engineer in Pittsburgh, PA to lead and support the creation of online modules, courses, and programs with applied knowledge of learning science design principles. Specific duties include: (i) mentoring junior colleagues and assuming responsibility and leadership for complex consultations, projects, and initiatives; (ii) leading teams working to support faculty in designing and implementing online/hybrid courses and in developing and incorporating technology enhanced learning (TEL) resources in their course design; (iii) analyzing learner/learning data, identifying opportunities for improvement in online design, and coordinating efforts to implement the changes and track their impact on student learning outcomes; (iv) designing and implementing online instructional assets for modules, courses, and programs in a way that aligns with teaching goals and applying evidenced-based learning principles; (v) identifying and implementing data hooks for cycles of data-informed continuous iterative improvements to online courses, programs, and related tools; (vi) creating and providing support for multimedia design, production, and editing, employing principles of multimedia for learning; (vii) consulting on the selection of learning technologies appropriately aligned with teaching and learning needs as well as strategies for effectively implementing technology to enhance learning in online and blended courses; (viii) developing learning resources and support programs aimed at educating instructors about relevant technology options, best practices for their uses to enhance learning, and strategies for effectively integrating them into courses; and (ix) staying abreast of and evaluating potential utility of emerging technology developments, potential pedagogical applications, and associated educational research.
Must have a master's degree in Learning Engineering, Digital Media Design for Learning, Instructional Design, or a directly online education-related field plus three (3) years of experience in a related position in Engineering education. Must have prior experience with each of the following: (i) consulting with faculty from multiple/diverse disciplines, especially STEM, in the creation of online/TEL instructional experiences; (ii) designing online/TEL instructional experiences for undergraduate, graduate, and working-professional learners; (iii) managing complex online/TEL course design projects; (iii) applying research from learning science and related fields to motivate online/TEL design choices and to assess online/TEL instructional materials; (iv) modern online/TEL tools, including but not limited to, Canvas, the Open Learning Initiative, Gradescope, Piazza, Atomic Assessments, or Jupyter Notebooks; and (v) planning, implementing, and maintaining technology infrastructure that enables authentic online practice. Must have knowledge of: (i) learning science research; (ii) best practices in pedagogy and andragogy; and (iii) research-based principles of multimedia design.
