Supervises the technical and operational day to day activities and staff of area and/or shift assigned. Under the guidance and direction of leadership, ensures the delivery of laboratory services consistent with quality, mission, and goals of the department.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinating staff and activities during a shift or for a localized area within the department of lab medicine. Activities include schedules and assignments, supply inventory, troubleshooting, and communications.
- Working with the laboratory manager to assure that adequate numbers of fully trained and competent staff are scheduled to perform the work of the laboratory.
- Participating in the selection of and provides input to the hiring, progressive discipline, and termination processes. Working with staff to identify and resolve complex technical and procedural problems occurring on the shifts and coaches' staff on appropriate strategies for handling future occurrences.
- Communicating all significant problems, trends, and issues to the leadership of the laboratory and develops strategies for improvement.
- Training and teaching laboratory personnel and other clinical staff.
- Contributing to department continuing education.
- Monitoring and ensuring the quality of shift work being performed.
- Participating in department continuing education, including training program expanding scope of knowledge.
- Maintaining communications with customers and clients of the laboratory.
- Performing a variety of special projects or additional work as needed/assigned, including participating in new test development and evaluation.
- Communicating significant events and problems to the lab leadership.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or a closely related field plus an internship
Experience:
- 5 years of relevant experience.
Certification/Registration:
- Current registration/certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology ASCP in one of the following:
- Certified Medical Technologist from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP),or Technologist registered/certified in one of the following:
- Certified Technician in Hematology,
- Certified Technician in Chemistry,
- Certified Microbiology,
- Certified Technician in Immunology, or Certified Tech in one of the following:
- Blood Banking from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP),
- Registered Microbiology from the American Association of Microbiology (AAM)
Shift/hours:
- Monday - Friday: 2:00pm - 10:30pm including rotating on call
