JOB DESCRIPTION

Essential Functions:




  1. Duties to include abrasive blasting, needle gunning, grinding and sanding surfaces for preparation.
  2. Sandblasts heavy equipment, such as concrete mixer trucks, boom trucks, and pay loaders, using spray gun and sandblasting equipment
  3. Cleans grease, dirt, dried concrete, old paint, and rust from equipment, using solvent, water, rags, brushes, pneumatic wire brush, and chipping hammer.
  4. Abrades surfaces of metal or hard-composition objects to remove adhering scale, sand, paint, grease, tar, rust, and dirt, and to impart specified finish, using abrasive blasting equipment.
  5. Shovels or pours abrasives, such as sand, grit, or shot of specified grade into machine hopper.
  6. Masks specified areas of object to protect from abrading action.
  7. Loads parts on racks in enclosed rooms, into tumbling barrels, or into cabinets.
  8. Turns valves on equipment to regulate pressure and composition of abrasive mixture flowing through nozzle or into tumbling barrel.
  9. Starts equipment that directs blast or flow of abrasive-laden compressed air, gas, or liquid over surface of parts.
  10. Manually directs nozzle over surface of large parts or inserts arms through glove-fitted cabinet openings and manipulates small parts under nozzles for specified interval. May examine finished parts to ensure conformance to specifications.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

QUALIFICATIONS:




  1. High school diploma or GED required.
  2. At least three years of previous experience using sandblasting tools and equipment as well as knowledge of corrosion-control methods and processes.
  3. Must be able to meet the background requirement to work in Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) Portsmouth, VA and NOB Norfolk, VA.
  4. Must be able to pass a drug screening.



Physical Requirements:




  1. Ability to lift 20 pounds regularly and up to 75 pounds occasionally.
  2. Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.



This is a physically demanding position and may accommodate most physical disabilities. There may be occasional lifting of materials weighing more than 20 pounds.

Environmental Conditions:

Due to the dangers of inhaling dust during the process, sandblasting is carefully controlled, using an alternate air supply, protective wear, and proper ventilation. There is generally exposure to hostile environments or loud noises or hazardous chemicals or smoke or extreme temperatures. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

During work-site visits will be required to wear appropriate PPE including, but not limited to:

Hard hat

Ear plugs or attenuator

Safety shoes

Dust mask or respirator

Gloves
