JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB SUMMARY: A painter with 4 or more years of experience applying coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of ships and other structures with the use of occasional supervision and while always adhering to industry safety standards. This position requires the ability to work long hours, including nights and weekends, on short notice.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Essential Functions:
- Prepares wood, fiberglass, and metal surfaces for painting, and paints parts, equipment, interiors and exteriors of ships, boats, shipyard and marina buildings, using brushes, spray guns, and rollers
- Mix solvents according to formula and immerse parts in solution or washes surfaces to remove grease, rust, scale, and dirt
- Smooths wooden and plaster surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, and sanding machines
- Fills cracks and holes with patching plaster, putty, or plastic wood
- Washes and treats surfaces with oil, turpentine, and other preparations
- Mixes and matches colors of paint, varnish, stain, shellac, and calcimine to plans and specs
- Operates spray-painting equipment or brushes and rolls paint on surfaces
- Sands between coats and polishes final coat to specified finish
- May spray or brush hot plastics or pitch on surfaces
- Cleans and maintains tools and equipment
- Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Able to follow compound specifications for mixing paints and painting techniques
- Able to read specs
- Able to read SDS sheets and apply information to task at hand. (PPE, VOC's, Environmental requirements, etc.)
- Advanced knowledge of SSPC Surface Preparation requirements
- Able to identify potential obstacles in task completion
- Understands paint and coating systems and can apply knowledge to task at hand
- Provides instruction and training
- Proficient in the use and maintenance of tools needed to complete assigned task
- Identifies potential hazards to employees, equipment and atmosphere, and installing proper preventive measures for exposure
- Able to set and maintain schedules
- Knowledgeable of heavy metals and their hazards
- Can oversee a project with minimum supervisory assistance
- Able to apply coatings to satisfy the criteria set for checkpoints
- Dependable and detail oriented
- Proficient in the use and maintenance of hand and power tools
- Tool recognition for job (Type of tools needed.)
- Assures correct set up of equipment and services prior to work (running lines, containment, DHT, etc.)
- Knowledge of power tool safety
- Advanced knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items (009-32)
- Adheres to and enforces fire safety rules and regulations
- Adheres and enforces industry safety standards
- Assures proper use of PPE
- May require occasional supervision to accomplish work
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED required and 4 or more years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to gain access to military installations
- Must pass a drug test and background check
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and seek help with weights over 50 pounds
- Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs/vertical ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This is a physically demanding position and may accommodate some physical disabilities. Physical dexterity may be required when performing walk thru and inspection of job sites. In the performance of the walk thru you will be required to transverse steep stairwells, vertical ladders and bending or stooping thru tight spaces. There may be occasional lifting of materials weighing not more than 50 pounds. Environmental Conditions: This position works on the jobsite. There is exposure to hostile environments, loud noises, hazardous chemicals/fumes and airborne particles, smoke, extreme temperatures moving mechanical parts: high, precarious places. During worksite visits it will be required to wear appropriate PPE including, but not limited to: Hard hat Ear plugs or attenuator Safety shoes Dust mask or respirator Gloves
