As part of the Sonos team, you'll collaborate with people of all styles, skill sets, and backgrounds to realize our vision while fostering a community where everyone feels included and empowered to do the best work of their lives.

This role is a hybrid position

Some roles require an office while others may be done remotely. This position is considered hybrid, allowing for a combination of remote work and in-office collaboration.

The Sonos Compliance Engineering team is crucial for establishing and maintaining compliance of our products and packaging throughout their entire lifecycle - from initial design through mass production to end-of-life - including third-party sourced products and packaging.

As the Global Environmental Compliance Engineer reporting to the Senior Manager of Compliance Engineering, you'll be instrumental in ensuring all Sonos products and packaging meet legally mandated global environmental compliance requirements. We are looking for someone with proven experience in communication, documentation, and management of diverse compliance engineering tasks. If you're passionate about solving complex regulatory challenges and striving to do things right every time, we want to hear from you!

What You'll Do

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Program Management:

  • Oversee and manage compliance with all applicable EPR schemes (Packaging, Product, Batteries) across various global jurisdictions where products are sold.

  • Coordinate data collection from internal teams and systems to create accurate reports for quantities of products, batteries, and types of packaging materials placed on the market.

  • Manage relationships with outside service organizations and EPR compliance schemes in multiple countries and jurisdictions.

  • Manage the budget and on-time payment of EPR obligations, including contract creation/approval, vendor setup, invoice management, Purchase Order (PO) creation, payment tracking, and collaboration with Accounts Payable (AP) and Finance.

  • Anticipate and manage multiple annual surveillance audits with a goal of zero non-conformities.

Regulatory Subject Matter Expert: Continuous Intelligence Gathering and Assessment, Strategic and Tactical Forward Projections, and Overall Program Management.

  • Maintain and apply in-depth compliance-related knowledge of current and future global environmental regulations, directives, and other rulemaking for consumer electronics products and packaging, such as Global RoHS, EU REACH SVHC & Annex XVII, EU POPS, EU PPWR, EU Battery Regulation, EU WEEE, EU PFAS, US EPA TSCA, US EPA & State PFAS, US TPCH, Canada Federal and Provincial PFAS, Canada Plastics Reporting, Energy Efficiency, and Eco-Design.

  • Possess and maintain situational awareness of global policies influencing legal rulemaking, such as global New Green Deals, Circular Economy Work Plans, Sustainable Product Initiatives, Regrettable Substitutions, Regrettable Circularity, Green Chemistry, Ecotoxicology, and Biocompatibility.

Product and Packaging Marking Compliance:

  • Demonstrate and apply comprehensive knowledge across all Sonos SKUs and target markets.

  • Through collaboration with development teams, ensure all Sonos products and packaging bear the compliant global mandatory environmental markings.

What You'll Need

  • 8 - 10+ years of progressive experience in global environmental compliance for consumer electronics or information technology (IT) equipment, with a documented history of self-driven continuous learning to stay current in this dynamic field.

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in an Engineering or Science-related field with relevant hands-on work experience. Master's or PhD in Engineering or Science-related fields with relevant hands-on work experience is a plus, but not required.

  • Office Presence: Must be in office at least 2 days per week

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience applying related industry standards, norms, and compliance processes, including IEC 63000 framework implementation, Full Material Declaration (FMD) and limitations, Restricted Substances Lists (RSLs) creation/maintenance, and the Documentary Approach versus Testing.

  • Demonstrable comfort traversing and decomposing an electro-mechanical product's full bill of material (BOM) with a deep understanding of the details around CPNs/IPNs, MPNs, AVLs, multi-sourcing, risk assessment, custom versus off-the-shelf, and materials as related to performing product environmental compliance assessment and life cycle compliance management.

  • Tools and Systems Proficiency: Recent and frequent use of enterprise tools and services, such as Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems (e.g., Arena, Windchill) and third-party product environmental compliance lifecycle management tools (e.g., GreenSoft, BOMcheck, Silicon Expert, Source Intelligence). Foundational implementation experience of these types of enterprise systems is a plus.

  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Expert in desktop research, adept at discovering and interpreting obscure and dynamic pieces of regulatory puzzles. Introspective and proactive in identifying and filling knowledge gaps.

  • Tactical and Strategic Thinking: Appreciation of the differences in data, information, knowledge, and wisdom (DIKW) and the application of that insight into this role.

  • Communication & Collaboration: Demonstrable skill in formal technical and business writing, aspiring to provide clarity in all communications. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills in an internal and external cross-collaborative environment, influencing and informing multiple stakeholders, and fostering team collaboration.
