Job Summary

This position provides complex analytical and financial support, focused on comprehensive ledger management, including deficit monitoring and detailed monthly payroll ledger review and corrections; chart of accounts maintenance; and detailed resident accounting maintenance. The Financial Analyst 3 works closely with the Finance Director and is expected to independently conduct in-depth financial analysis to inform strategic decision-making. Assignments are often given on a project basis and the incumbent is expected to gather and sort information from multiple sources, and to present the finished product in a clear and concise manner with minimal supervision to support high-level decision-making

The Financial Analyst 3 also independently manages resident accounting including the accurate and timely submission of trainee offset and the preparation of quarterly forecast reports. Must be able to demonstrate professionalism, diplomacy, and exercise good judgment within defined procedures and practices, and apply organizational policies and procedures to resolve various issues. Must be able to identify and troubleshoot discrepancies in financial reporting and make corrections as appropriate.

The Financial Analyst 3 creates and maintains projections and other summary reports detailing expenses and revenues in the department. In addition, this position routinely submits financial reports, and reviews financial transactions.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $89,600 - $134,400 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (ONHS) at the University of California, San Francisco is a recognized leader in clinical care, research, and education. The Department of ONHS consists of 9 clinical divisions performing ~83,000 procedures including General Otolaryngology; Pediatric Otolaryngology; Head & Neck Oncologic Surgery & Endocrine Surgery; Laryngology; Otology/Neurotology, & Skull Base Surgery; Rhinology & Sinus Surgery; Facial Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery; Sleep Surgery; and Audiology. Outpatient and inpatient clinical activities are performed across 7 sites across the SF Bay area - Mt. Zion, Mission Bay, Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, Zuckerberg San Francisco General, San Francisco VA, Redwood Shores, and Berkeley Outpatient Clinic. The Department of OHNS also consists of 5 research laboratories with ~$11M in sponsored research revenue in FY24/FY25 - Coleman Memorial Laboratory, Speech Neuroscience Laboratory, Epstein Laboratories, Head & Neck Cancer Research, and Skull Base and Cerebrovascular Lab.

The department consists of approximately 50 faculty members and 105 non-faculty academic and staff employees, including postdocs, visiting scholars, clinical volunteers, emeritus faculty and staff volunteers, 25 residents & 4 fellows, with a total annual budget of ~$44 million. The department has experienced rapid growth and has increased faculty by >20% in the last year. Additional recruitment and lab expansions are planned over the next three years.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 3+ years of directly relevant experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems.
  • Ability to independently gather required information to organize, and perform financial analysis assignments.
  • Proven ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
  • Proven ability using spreadsheet and database software for complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports. Proficient in Excel for data analysis and reporting.
  • Proven interpersonal skills with peers throughout the organization; strong service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. Proven ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to function as a member of a team.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Demonstrates exceptional attention to detail, crucial for identifying and rectifying discrepancies.
  • Demonstrates independent problem-solving abilities, resourcefulness, and decision-making within defined parameters.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge of UCSF systems such as BearBuy, MyReport, MyExpense, PeopleSoft, and Staff Portal.
