Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Anatomy Learning Center (ALC) Director and the Biomedical Sciences Course Director, the Anatomy Lab Assistant will assist in the coordination of educational activities and support daily operations and maintenance work in the Anatomy Learning Center and the Dental Anatomy Laboratory.

Responsibilities include overseeing and maintaining anatomy facilities and equipment; collaborating to procure embalmed specimens, receive delivery, and coordinate scheduled cremations; and preparing laboratories for student learning. In this role they will oversee preparation and distribution of chemical solutions and other material for various class laboratories and properly dispose of biohazardous fluid waste through management of chemical inventory and coordination waste pick up with EH&S.

Technical assignments include utilizing appropriate cleaning protocols; ordering laboratory supplies; ensuring proper storage and accurate labeling of specimens; maintaining current anatomical inventory; ensuring laboratory compliance with EH&S standards for BSL-2 level certification; assisting faculty with tasks for efficient anatomy practical exam set-up; and acting as a responsible steward over an irreplaceable collection of embalmed cadavers, prosections, and human skeletons.

This position is per diem, with anticipated hours averaging around 20 hours per week. The work schedule will include non-business hours, including weekend and evening shifts to support extended hours operation of both the Anatomy Learning Center and Dental anatomic laboratories.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $24.77 - $29.49 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Anatomy Learning Center (ALC) provides training for health professions education programs for the University which includes 3,500 faculty, 2,100 health professions students, and 1,500 residents and fellows. Simultaneous classes, independent study, training and research often occur in the ALC. The Center is managed by the Office of Medical Education and works closely with the Willed Body Program to provide cadaveric training.

The ALC is a 6,000-square-foot space that opened in 2012 with state-of-the-art architecture, featuring a 36-air-exchange per hour ventilation system, a multipurpose room, HD screens, energy-regenerating sinks, accessible power outlets, and floods of natural light. The main laboratory houses 32 dissection tables, a prep room, and two locker rooms. Located on the 13th floor with views of Golden Gate Park, the Presidio, and on most days, the Golden Gate Bridge.

Required Qualifications


  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and three years of laboratory experience; or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and two years of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Thorough knowledge of laboratory procedures.
  • High-level attention to details.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks.
  • Effective written, oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team in a high-volume environment.
  • Organizational skills and ability to multitask and provide instructions.
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Thorough knowledge of lab or experimental processes and protocols
  • Ability to perform delicate manual or manipulative skills in a limited variety of tasks.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and /or equivalent experience / training.
  • Two or more years of laboratory experience (or an equivalent combination of BSL-2 or cadaveric (donor-based) training).
  • Experience working in a BSL-2 laboratory setting.
  • Experience working in an academic laboratory environment.
  • Experience working outside normal business hours with demonstrated ability to manage time.
