Job Summary

The anticipated duration of this assignment is approximately 3 months.

The Medical Assistant is an integral member of the care delivery team, supporting the Department of General Internal Medicine (DGIM) at all UCSF locations. Under supervision, this role provides both direct patient care and administrative support to ensure the effective operation of the clinical environment. The Medical Assistant performs clinical procedures, manages communication systems, and supports patient flow while upholding UCSF's highest standards for patient care, safety, and service excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Support

  • Measure and document vital signs, height, weight, pain screening, and chief complaints.
  • Conduct health maintenance screens and assist in medication reconciliation.
  • Assist with medical exams and complex procedures.
  • Serve as a chaperone as needed and transport patients as directed.
  • Perform EKGs and simple lab testing, including specimen collection and quality assurance.
  • Coordinate patient referrals, obtain medication authorizations, and manage APeX inbaskets.
  • Ensure proper infection control and complete annual competency training.
  • Lock medication cabinets at all times and support the One Touch Team with clinical calls.
Communication
  • Uphold UCSF's Telephone and House Standards in all communications.
  • Maintain professional, courteous interactions with patients and staff.
  • Coordinate care using APeX, MyChart, and other systems.
  • Communicate patient care issues effectively and provide suggestions for operational improvement.
  • Manage incoming calls and patient concerns using Cisco phone systems and APeX protocols.
Operations Maintenance
  • Maintain clean, well-stocked exam rooms, nursing stations, and labs.
  • Order and restock clinical supplies.
  • Ensure adherence to infection control and equipment sterilization policies.
  • Participate in quality improvement and customer service initiatives.
APeX System Functions
  • Pend and modify clinical orders, create referrals, update appointment statuses.
  • Create and manage SmartPhrase templates and telephone encounters.
  • Use APeX tools to support provider workflow and documentation processes.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program or equivalent training/experience.
  • Minimum of six months of experience as a Medical Assistant.
  • Computer proficiency, including basic keyboarding and use of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Willingness and ability to work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Current American Heart Association CPR Certification.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Familiarity with Epic (APeX) electronic health record system.
