Job Summary

This position serves in the role of an architect and lead developer responsible for planning, designing, implementing/coding, deploying, and maintaining applications and systems within Ed IT. Ed IT consists of several dozen applications and systems spanning learning and administrative systems serving more than 30,000 users, including learners, staff, administrators, applicants, and faculty.

The successful candidate will need to have advanced technical skills and experience related to the following:

  • Understand and address the impact of security vulnerabilities and policies on Ed IT applications and infrastructure, along with formulating plans to mitigate and address these vulnerabilities.
  • Lead and establish best practices in the software development life cycle including secure coding practices, proper coding documentation, code formatting and style guidelines, reducing code complexity, practice agile methodologies, and push for a culture of software ownership (by developers).
  • As architect and lead, candidate is also expected to carry out code reviews, analyze code and reduce complexity and redundancy, and ensure design and framework is implemented accordingly.
  • Understand business processes, interfaces/APIs, systems, and environments that interact with Ed IT applications.
  • Serve as lead in implementing and maintaining software development infrastructure and tools.
  • Research and prototype emerging technologies and approaches.
  • Works on issues that impact project success or address future concepts, products, or technologies.
  • Serves as a consultant to related management efforts as needed, including establishing IT technology standards, best practices, and strategies for infrastructure and departmental growth

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $118,300 - $268,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

UCSF is technologically and organizationally complex, with both centralized and departmental IT units providing support for enterprise and specialized services. UCSF IT provides infrastructure, network, security, analytics, integration, and application support services, which are essential to the organization's ability to support growth, mitigate security risk, and manage, store, and share sensitive information. To better serve the Education Mission, UCSF IT has recently created a new IT Education unit, which is in a period of growth. Led by the Associate CIO for Education, this unit is charged with developing collaborative relationships, processes, and services that appropriately enable the education community to execute its mission, while keeping UCSF's IT environment secure and sufficiently cost-effective. With a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, this IT Education team is actively working to establish a computing architecture and services to support digital equity and digital transformation to support and advance the UCSF education mission.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience
  • 5+ years of relevant progressive experience
  • Experience demonstrating capability to lead and participate, in a team environment, in complex IT projects
  • Experience with complete software development lifecycle;
  • Experience with web application development and deployment on Tomcat and Apache platforms
  • Highly proficient in test-driven development, both unit and integration testing
  • Experience with object-relational mapping: abstract concepts, specific libraries and real-world implementations
  • Strong data analysis skills, especially education IT-related
  • Advanced knowledge of software, database, infrastructure or other IT function. Knowledge relating to the design and development of software across the organization.
  • Advanced knowledge of other related areas of IT. Ability to apply department processes and procedures to work.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Ability to understand business needs and how business systems can support those needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • May require high-level skills in web software, web software language and object oriented software concepts. May require knowledge of network protocols and how they are used on a large (campus / medical center / OP-wide, institution-wide or beyond) network. May require advanced knowledge of data storage, processing analysis and visualization technologies and how they are used in administrative and / or academic endeavors at a large, top-tier research university or medical center.
  • Demonstrated advanced ability to translate business needs into long-term architecture solutions. Expertise relating to the design and development of software across the organization.
  • Advanced knowledge of data storage, processing, and analysis and how they are used in administrative, medical and / or academic endeavors.
  • Understanding of and experience with key modeling and description languages used to map complex business processes to architectural components, develop common data resource architectures, and create reference frameworks.
  • Extensive experience with the integration of complex, diverse, internally and externally developed implementations of business functions to build scalable systems.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
