Job Description:

Perkins Coie LLP has an immediate opening for an experienced Senior Discovery Attorney in its E-Discovery Services & Strategy practice group (ESS). This role is ideal for a tech-savvy E-Discovery attorney who can advise case teams on best practices for defensible and strategic discovery; coordinate with case and project management teams to implement E-Discovery solutions; manage document review teams; and handle special projects as needed. The Senior Discovery Attorney will report to Senior Counsel and Head of E-Discovery Practice.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

These essential functions are primary job duties that incumbents must be able to perform unassisted or with some reasonable accommodation.

  • Counsel case teams and clients on all aspects of E-Discovery including, for example: defensible preservation, collection, review, and production methodologies; ESI protocols; selection of technology; and E-Discovery workflows.
  • Consult with case teams and clients on effective database design to ensure efficient document review.
  • Manage and mentor teams of Discovery and Review Attorneys, ensuring accurate, high-quality deliverables for document reviews and other projects.
  • Collaborate closely with other ESS attorneys and technologists.
  • Assist case teams with drafting case training materials.
  • Perform quality control of document coding for relevance, issues, and privilege.
  • Prepare privilege logs.
  • Identify materials for use at depositions and trial. Draft deposition outlines. Draft deposition transcript summaries. Assist with case chronology and fact development.
  • Perform special projects with varying parameters, such as: legal research; document research requiring advanced search capabilities in Relativity, DISCO, and other platforms; drafting memos and pleadings; taking and defending depositions; client secondments; and other tasks.
  • Prepare internal and external trainings and presentations. Examples could include new hire trainings, technology demonstrations, and overviews of substantive law for continuing legal education.
  • Stay current on legal developmentsin E-Discovery, data privacy, information governance, and legal technology.

SPECIFIC SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Familiarity with the litigation process, including discovery and trial.
  • Strong knowledge of Relativity, DISCO, and other E-Discovery technology, including proficiency with advanced search methodologies and practical application of structured and conceptual analytics and artificial intelligence.
  • Strong knowledge of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and relevant state rules regarding discovery.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities, deadlines, and projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-directed and self-driven.
  • Capable of ramping up quickly and pivoting between various efforts.
  • Superb attention to detail and demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and maintain extreme focus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and manage both up and down.
  • Adaptable, eager to learn new skills, and willing to go where needed.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including persuasive and legal writing.
  • Strong client service skills.
  • Fluent in standard MS Office applications and able to quickly master new technology. Proficient in Excel.

SPECIFIC SKILLS PREFERRED

  • Practice experience in complex commercial litigation, intellectual property, regulatory investigations, privacy, or cybersecurity.
  • Experience with cross-border discovery and data privacy regulations (e.g. GDPR, CCPA).
  • Experience in information governance, including drafting data retention policies.
  • Previous document review experience strongly preferred.
  • Foreign language skills and advanced technical proficiencies and certifications are a plus.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Juris Doctorate degree and at least 3 years of related work experience, preferably in a law firm or corporate legal department.
  • Attorneys must be active members of the state bar association where the Perkins Coie Office is located.

This position may be filled in the following location(s). The listed compensation range reflects the typical pay for this role, though it is rare for new hires to receive an offer at the top of the range. Actual compensation may vary depending on experience, skills, market conditions, and internal equity.

Washington state compensation range: $123,465 to $168,030 annually
