Job Summary

The Clinical Supervisor will work closely with the program director to support four to eight social workers and/or substance use counselors in delivering culturally responsive, trauma-informed and person-centerd patient services. The incumbent provides clinical supervision for staff as they support patients working towards changing their substance use and improving the quality of their daily lives in an outpatient clinic setting.

The incumbent ensures accountability and stewardship of UCSF Dept. of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental, government, and accrediting body standards and procedures. A portion of time may be spent performing individual tasks related to the clinic such as individual counseling, de-escalation, care coordination and other intake services; however, supervisory and oversight of team operations constitute the primary part of the job. The incumbent will collaborate with the program directors, medical director, and other staff on program policy, program evaluation, and process improvement. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $115,500 - $173,300 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

Opiate Treatment Outpatient Program (OTOP) is operated through the UCSF Department of Psychiatry at San Francisco General Hospital in partnership with the San Francisco Department of Public Health. OTOP provides evidence-based outpatient treatment for substance use disorders with particular emphasis on medications for opioid addiction treatment.

Our clinic has rapidly been expanding intake services to increase access to methadone treatment in San Francisco. This is an exciting time to join our team as we grow and transform with the expansion of our services to best support our patients' needs. We are looking for a mission-driven, team leader committed to excellent, de-stigmatized patient care for patients looking to change their substance use.

Required Qualifications


  • Master's degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related area and minimum of five years of experience including three in a lead/supervisory role or equivalent experience / training.
  • 2 years of post-master's experience with qualifications to provide supervision of hours for clinicians working towards licensure with CA Board of Behavioral Sciences
  • 1 year working with adults with substance use disorders and/or dual-diagnosis
  • Ability to work with patients and program staff from diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge of behavioral health and substance use service operations and ability to apply concepts in an acute care setting.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills in mentoring employees. Actively cooperates and supports the work of others.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and execute plans to meet deadlines.
  • Organizational skills for coordinating staff schedules and unit operations.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively work well with others to achieve common goals. Customer service orientation to quickly address questions or issues.
  • Ability to apply reasoning skills to evaluate issues and identify a potential solution. Provides guidance and judgement within defined standards to determine an appropriate action.
  • Verbal and written communication skills, to explain routine clinical concepts, actively listen and advise. Assists staff with managing challenging patient interactions with sensitivity and skill ensuring patient care service standards are consistently met.
  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software. Comprehensive knowledge of organization's patient record system to teach others.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience working at an Opiate Treatment Program (OTP) and knowledge of OTP treatment and regulations.
  • Certification in psychiatric health specialty preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical center, HR and UC policies and processes. Knowledge of relevant psychiatric health services internal policies and external regulations.
  • One year working with low-income, unhoused and/or justice involved populations

License/Certification


  • Licensure as a LCSW or LMFT or LPCC from the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences Examiner
