UIC is seeking a
Business Process Analyst to join our Technology Solutions team. This role will work under the direction of the Director of IT Planning and Strategy, the Business Process Analyst is responsible for working to understand business goals, objectives, processes, and requirements. Collaborate with both IT and project stakeholders to elicit, clarify, and translate business requirements into documentation and conceptual design from which a solution can be determined, developed, and deployed. Work with project managers to ensure project outcomes achieve desired results. Assist with leading and facilitating groups across all levels of the organization to deliver valued outcomes, including improved processes, adoption of improved methodologies, and use of analytics to drive business decisions.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Project Responsibilities:
- Works with stakeholders to understand the current process and elicit new requirements using a variety of facilitation techniques such as brainstorming sessions, interviews, requirements workshops, document analysis, surveys, site visits, business process descriptions, task and workflow analysis, use case review, and structured process walkthrough sessions.
- Documents business needs assessment, identifying the problem to be solved and providing input for potential solutions.
- Conducts research on vendors and software products to determine if solutions to business requirements currently exist within or outside the business.
- Identifies and clarifies requirements (business and technical) with internal and external stakeholders using basic conceptual and logical process/data modeling techniques including user stories, detailed functional specifications, and process flows workflow charts, diagrams, data migration rules, business rules, wireframes, or other detailed deliverables. Performs analysis and documents future state process design, inputs, outputs, and cross swim lane handoffs. Identifies and communicates potential gaps with future state processes.
- Understands the distinction between functional, non-functional, and business requirements. Can translate the user's business requirements and technical requirements into detailed functional designs for development, testing and implementation. Serves as focal point between key business leaders/ partners and technology to ensure requirements are delivered on time and in a comprehensive, quality manner. Maintain continuity between business team and IS organization throughout the project lifecycle.
- Develops and leads the requirements traceability process from requirements through to testing with appropriate gap analysis to ensure requirements meet the needs of the business.
- Identifies and communicates risks and issues impacting business rules, functional requirements, and specifications.
- Identifies BA project tasks and estimates the work effort required to develop the requirements for a given project.
Strategy:
- Stays up to date on higher education trends as well as the latest process and IT advancements to automate and modernize systems.
- Keeps the end user/customer at the forefront of thought; supports, guides, and influences users to see opportunities and value with new approaches using technology.
- Understands UIC's and Technology Solution's strategy and direction.
- Evaluates business processes and recommends ideas to support business process improvement. Leads ongoing reviews of business processes and development of optimization strategies.
- Conducts meetings and presentations to share ideas and findings.
Project Support:
- Supports the Project Manager by identifying Business Analysis project tasks, communicating dependencies/risks, and managing timing expectations.
- Partners with the Project Manager to follow the appropriate change control processes.
- Assists PMO and Project Managers with development of program/project plans, risk and issue management, project reporting and project presentations and documentation. Identify, document and update business processes, including identifying impacts to policies, procedures, and controls.
- Supports the Quality Assurance team by ensuring that requirements documentation can be easily translated into test plans, ensuring that the proper test plans and test cases have been reviewed and meet the business and technology testing needs.
- Supports the Development Team by communicating requirements and functional specifications as well as responding to requests for clarification.
- Participates in managing the scope of projects and related changes.
- Assists in the development of training material. Conducts training as appropriate

Minimum Qualifications Required:
- Bachelor Degree within Computer Science or closely related field of study
- Minimum 5 years of professional IT experience within Business Systems Analysis including demonstrated experience including analysis and interpretation of functional business and data requirements with the ability to translate into technical and design specifications for systems implementations and recommending system alternatives for both new and existing systems.
- Demonstrated proficiency with diagramming tools such as Microsoft Visio to convey information, concepts, and ideas.
- Demonstrated experience in creating accurate business and technical requirements, use cases, and process flows, requirements elicitation facilitation and documentation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two years' experience in Higher Education. Two years' prior experience working in an IT department.
- Basic knowledge of IT systems and platforms.
- Demonstrated organizational and multitasking skills to provide accurate, detail oriented work that is appropriately prioritized to meet stringent deadlines and respond to matters of urgency.
- Extensive knowledge of spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence, and paragraph structure and formatting.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills. Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft computer programs/applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Skilled at eliciting requirements and brainstorming workshop facilitation. Facilitation tools and techniques.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with broad-based constituencies.
- Ability to work independently and exercise judgment and discretion.
- Excellent teamwork skills and the ability to serve as a team leader.
- Demonstrated self-starter, strong initiative.
