Job Overview
To provide expert services in planning, directing, operating, controlling, and coordinating an information and communication technology accessibility program at the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI) at Patrick Space Force Base, Florida, ensuring compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. Responsibilities
Essential Duties & Job Functions:
- Develop policies, strategies, and best practices to support implementation of Section 508 accessibility standards for digital content and information systems.
- Conduct compliance activities, including accessibility evaluations, audits, and risk assessments of information systems to ensure adherence to Section 508 standards.
- Serve as the local Section 508 Coordinator, monitoring public-facing web pages and digital products for compliance and remediating nonconforming content.
- Assist in developing and delivering digital accessibility training for staff, faculty, and students, including technical training and general awareness materials.
- Collaborate with departments, including Knowledge Management and Curriculum Development, to ensure accessibility in training modules and systems.
- Work with digital product developers to create accessible products, publications, and media, providing guidance on accessibility techniques.
- Participate in Institute-wide accessibility reporting to meet internal and external requirements.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Accountable For:
- Providing expert guidance on digital accessibility policies and compliance.
- Ensuring digital products and systems meet Section 508 standards.
- Delivering effective training and support to staff and students on accessibility requirements.
- Maintaining accurate records and reports related to accessibility compliance.
Job Requirements
Mandatory:
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must have an Associate's Degree or higher, or 5+ years of experience in digital accessibility, information technology, or a related field.
- Expert knowledge of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and related accessibility standards (e.g., W3C WCAG 2.0 Level AA).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and PDF tools (e.g., Adobe Acrobat).
- Knowledge of assistive technologies (e.g., screen readers, magnification software, speech-to-text software).
- Strong oral and written communication skills to present complex technical information clearly.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and provide training on accessibility practices.
- Ability to evaluate digital systems and develop solutions to meet accessibility requirements.
- Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check and pre-hire drug test.
Preferred:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in a related field (e.g., Information Technology, Computer Science, or Disability Studies).
- Experience with web accessibility testing tools and Section 508 conformance testing.
- Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Knowledge Management Systems.
Working Conditions:
- The work environment is a standard office setting with moderate noise levels.
- Work may require occasional weekend, evening, or temporary duty (TDY) travel.
- The position is eligible for regular recurring telework or remote work.
