SUMMARY

The Caseworker/Counselor/Discharge Planner is responsible for managing an assigned caseload of inmates. This position provides correctional counseling, identifies problem areas for individual inmates, counsels and recommends rehabilitative services/drafts individual treatment plans, makes appropriate treatment referrals and produces and maintains proper documentation.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for managing a caseload of inmates and coordinating various activities/groups as directed.
  • Perform intake/classification functions by evaluating and assessing inmates for classification into one of several risk categories so that the appropriate level of security and supervision can be determined. In addition, the position provides information for proper housing levels and conducts periodic reviews of intake/classification as appropriate.
  • Responsible to produce, distribute and maintain various reports/records as assigned.
  • Responsible to function as a liaison between the prison, the inmate and outside agencies whose services are utilized for inmate treatment/rehabilitation.
  • Maintain a positive rapport with inmates and staff.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have at least a bachelor's degree; Social sciences are preferred or a related field. Considerable knowledge or casework and practices in a correctional setting is preferred. Training in interview practices and techniques is beneficial. A valid driver's license is required. A criminal history check will be completed.

SKILLS:Ability to work with inmates, gain confidence and recommend treatment goals and objectives. The ability to prepare and keep records as well as treatment notes is essential. Good communication skills with the public, including governmental agencies, is required.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Emotional and mental stability to deal with the complex environment. The ability to walk and stand for long periods of time may be necessary.
