Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Summer Stars Unified League Director, a resource team member (Mentor) is responsible for assisting in mentoring, coaching and facilitating all aspects of the Special Olympics Unified basketball league. The basketball league is comprised of male students between the ages of 15 and 21 who may or may not have an intellectual disability.

Position Summary

  • Promote a safe and ethical work/game environment at all times relating to health and safety standards
  • Enforce league rules at all times
  • Assist with daily set-up and take-down of the facility equipment which includes but is not limited to gym equipment, league sports equipment, water station, etc.
  • Assist in monitoring the MPS summer meals program on site and all programming areas of the building
  • Assist in supervising and mentoring approximately 100 unified league participants promoting teamwork, encouragement, and good sportsmanship
  • Engage in positive interactions with fellow resource team members and other MPS personnel in an effort to promote a team approach
  • Engage in positive interactions with MPS building staff, parents and community members
Supervision Required

Reports to the Summer Stars League Director which is overseen by the Recreation Supervisor of Adaptive Athletics program.

Job Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Successfully pass a criminal background screening
  • Able to meet the scheduling needs for this position (M-TH evenings, 4:45pm-8:30pm)
  • Desire and temperament to work the MPS male students with disabilities
  • Willingness to learn
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Attend the mandatory coaches in-service
Preferred Experience

  • Background in physical education, special education, and/or Special Olympics
  • Work experience/volunteer with special education students
  • Active or prior involvement with Special Olympics
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of basketball, however, experience playing, teaching or coaching basketball is preferred
  • Ability to lead by example and hold participants accountable
  • Ability to communicate effectively with special education students ages 15-21 years old
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working with fellow program staff, building staff and high school age volunteer staff
  • Exhibit verbal and written skills
  • Ability to multi-task while maintaining composure and professionalism under pressure
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Working Environment

  • Tentative work schedule, Six (6) week period, June 16 - July 31, 2025
  • Monday Thursday, 4:45 p.m. 8:30 p.m.
  • High school gymnasium, no air conditioning
