TITLE:
Sr. Buyer

DEPARTMENT: Purchasing

EXEMPTION STATUS: Full-Time, Salary, Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY: The Buyer selects, develops, and maintains sources of supplies both direct and indirect materials to support manufacturing operations. Candidate should have sourcing background and/or supply chain experience.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluates, sources, establishes, and maintains a supplier base to assure lead time, pricing, quality and on-time complete delivery of materials to meet production requirements.
  • Investigates and establishes cost savings, cost reductions, and value analysis opportunities in accordance with departmental goals and objectives.
  • Negotiates contract terms and conditions, coordinates design reviews, communicates quality requirements and provides consistent availability of quality goods to manufacturing.
  • Coordinates engineering releases on new products and engineering changes on purchased materials with supplies.
  • Leads a minimum of two continuous improvement teams involving both suppliers and American Seating employees.
  • Maintains the supply data base on quotes, standard costs, and lead times enabling material control to effectively perform their job.
  • Coordinates major procurement programs as directed.
  • Exercises the most effective use of corporate funds in the acquisition of assigned commodities.
  • Assists in developing operations procedures for supplier development and cross-training with other buyers to provide needed coverage.
  • Assists materials planners in the effective performance of their job.
  • Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business or Logistics.
  • Prior experience in material control and/or supplier development.
  • CPM or CPSM is preferred.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Ability to use PC and software required for this position.
  • Ability to use AS400 and management software.
  • Knowledge of BPICS manufacturing system.
  • Managerial and negotiating skills.
  • Knowledge of purchasing law and contracts.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Exceptionally well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Job typically functions in the normal office environment. In some cases, work requires periodic temperature changes and occasional exposure and discomfort to heat, dust, noise, and the like.
  • Extended work hours and overnight work schedule occasionally required.
  • Work requires frequent or occasional computer use, keyboarding and in some case, occasional lifting, pulling or carrying up to 25 pounds.
  • Work occasionally requires concentration on figures, paperwork, data etc., and frequent pressures related to meeting deadlines, scheduling requirements and simultaneous projects. Work is frequently affected by distracting influences such as people, telephone calls, etc.
