Posting Summary |
Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking an International Services Advisor. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for International Student & Scholar Services, the International Services Advisor provides immigration advising and services to international students and scholars of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Newark Campus.
The Advisor is responsible for and not limited to the following.
- Handles a significant portion of the student appointments, walk-in traffic, data management and paperwork
- Works with Rutgers colleagues, government officials, and international advising staff in other schools when handling and following up with individual cases
- Plays an important role in making the transition for international students and scholars to the University a positive experience
The International Service Advisor has heavy daily contact with international students and scholars, as well as colleagues in other departments on campus. This highly skilled professional is a key member of the office team which also includes another International Services Advisor, a full-time Administrative Assistant and two Student Aides. This is a very "people-oriented" position in which building strong relationships with students, faculty, and staff, as well as effective teamwork with colleagues is of the utmost importance. |

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Requires a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Also requires two years' professional experience. The experience must have included learning a body of specialized knowledge specific to the job, exercising critical thinking skills to solve problems, and customer or client service work.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience with cross-cultural exchange and/or studying or working overseas preferred; strong commitment to international education.
- Fluency in or familiarity with a second language preferred
- Master's degree or some graduate study
- Degree in international relations, anthropology, area studies, foreign languages, or another field directly related to working international students
- Experience advising international students in an academic environment
- Experience living and/or working abroad
- Knowledge of one or more foreign languages
- Familiarity with F-1 and/or J-1 regulations and with SEVIS
