Position Description: |
The University of Iowa, College of Dentistry has an opening for a post-doctoral research scholar in Dr. Zhang's laboratory in the Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research. Our group seeks to 1) identify mechanisms of the interactions of connective tissue and barrier epithelium at the gingival mucosal surface for tissue regeneration; 2) delineate the role of innate and adaptive immunity involved in the pathogenesis of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and clinical biological samples. In collaboration with other researchers, we also perform therapeutic studies through a locally delivered approach to evaluate the effectiveness of bio-engineered (e.g. nanoparticles) novel small molecules in treating periodontitis. This Post-Doc Scholar appointment is limited to one-year however may be continued if funding is available and satisfactory progress is made. Postdoctoral Research Scholars (FP01) are temporary, at will appointments at The University of Iowa. |
Education Requirement: |
- By time of appointment, PhD in Periodontology, dental science, biomedical science, or equivalent relevant degree;

Required Qualifications: |
- expertise in extracellular biology and molecular biology;
- experience in translational research using human oral biological samples for basic research;
- experience in explant/cell culturing;
- proficiency in histology (immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry staining), and cell signaling (Western blotting);
- ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary group; and
- excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Desirable Qualifications: |
- DDS/DMD or equivalent;
- Certificate in a dental specialty training;
- Experience with animal research;
- Experience in nanoparticle-related biomaterials; and
- first-authored publications.
