Physical Therapist Assistant I

Under the direct, on-premise supervision of a licensed physical therapist, provides physical therapy treatment procedures to an assigned inpatient caseload. Maintains an orderly environment in the physical therapy gym and treatment areas.


Clinical Responsibilities

  • Read and review the medical record to understand the patient's diagnosis, precautions, goals, and treatment plans. Ask questions regarding unclear information.
  • Provide direct interventions in individual or group sessions as planned, especially gait training, exercise, and modalities. Can treat patients in any setting in the hospital, including the ambulatory network.
  • Evaluate the patient's response to intervention and document patient progress in the chart. Instruct patients and parents in home program, especially gait training and transfer.
  • Inform the physical therapist of progress/problems with specific patients.
  • Perform care coordination tasks associated with patient care, including communication with hospital and community providers, tracking of medical equipment, etc.


Academic Responsibilities

  • Maintain current skills and knowledge by identifying own learning needs, both formally and informally, to practice a lifestyle of life-long learning. Seek opportunity for clinical growth and development within the department through mentorship.
  • Pursue and achieve departmental competencies as assigned.
  • Attend inservices within the department and hospital as appropriate.


Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain productivity and fiscal responsibility in the provision/utilization of services.
  • Actively participate in department planning meetings.


Education Requirement

  • Pennsylvania State license as a Physical Therapy Assistant.
  • CPR Certification (within 90 days of hire).
  • Associate Degree from an approved Physical Therapy Assistant Program.
  • Pediatric experience preferred.
  • Level 4 Worker.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Interpersonal relationships skills that permit effective communication with parents, children of various ages, peers, and supervisors.


Schedule Notes

  • Approximately 3 months for summer coverage.
  • Monday-Friday: 8AM - 4:30PM.
