Position Summary:
Synergy is seeking aSoftware Developer, System Softwareto support the United States Coast Guard (USCG) at the Aviation Logistics Center (ALC)-Information Systems Division (ISD). The Software Developer, System Software is responsible for the sustainment, performance, troubleshooting, and secure operation of system software across legacy, virtualized, and hybrid environments critical to USCG's aviation logistics mission.
The Software Developer, System Software will contribute to system-level problem resolution, vulnerability remediation, scripting automation, and configuration management in support of 24x7 operations. This role ensures software functionality, data integrity, and availability in compliance with DHS and USCG cybersecurity standards.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Support the operational stability and security of system-level software running on Windows, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), VMware, and Kubernetes platforms.
  • Assist with the diagnosis, resolution, and documentation of software-related incidents and root cause analysis in coordination with Tier III support.
  • Perform routine system patching, upgrades, and security hardening in compliance with STIG, NIST 800-53, and DHS 4300A requirements.
  • Remediate vulnerabilities identified through Tenable or similar scanning tools, ensuring systems meet cybersecurity compliance standards.
  • Support legacy platforms such as OpenROAD, SAS, Ingres, and SQL/PLSQL applications while contributing to hybrid modernization efforts.
  • Develop and maintain scripts and tools (e.g., Bash, PowerShell, Python) to support automated deployment, system monitoring, and operational health checks.
  • Contribute to the sustainment and testing of systems across development, staging, and production environments using VMware, Hyper-V, and Kubernetes.
  • Collaborate with software developers, network engineers, and cybersecurity personnel to ensure reliable and secure software operation.
  • Participate in Agile DevSecOps workflows, utilizing tools such as Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket for issue tracking, documentation, and version control.
  • Maintain and update technical documentation, including system configurations, deployment processes, and standard operating procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned by management.
Skills/Qualifications:
  • Proficiency with administration and troubleshooting in RHEL, Windows Server, and virtualized environments (VMware/Hyper-V).
  • Working knowledge of legacy system platforms, including SAS, OpenROAD, and Ingres.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills using Bash, PowerShell, or Python.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity remediation and experience applying STIGs and vulnerability resolutions.
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps methodologies, Agile environments, and version control systems (Git-based tools preferred).
  • Ability to effectively document technical issues and communicate with multidisciplinary teams.
Education/Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Computer Science, Math, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field. Two (2) years of directly relevant experience may substitute for one (1) year of formal education.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in one or more of current RHEL, Windows, and VMWare, and SAS.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of performing security remediation to systems with vulnerabilities based on security scans.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in an Agile DevSecOps software and engineering environment and Methodologies.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience with Kubernetes, Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket.
  • Experience supporting federal government systems, particularly within DHS or DoD environments, is strongly preferred.
Clearance:
  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Must have or be eligible to obtain a Position of Public Trust or DoD Secret Clearance.
Certification Requirement:
  • CompTIA Security+
  • Additional certifications (Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator, Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), ITIL Foundation, or Network+) are a plus.

Compensation for roles at Synergy varies depending on a wide variety of factors including but not limited to the requirements of the role; education and certifications; knowledge, training, skills and abilities; level of experience; geographic location; and alignment with market data, law, and other business and organizational needs. As required by local law, the posted pay range represents the lowest to the highest pay that Synergy believes in good faith it might pay for this particular job, depending on the circumstances. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
