Position title: Hydrogeology Lab/Field Specialist (Junior Specialist Rank) Salary range:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Specialist Fiscal Year. A salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding. Under the direction of Andrew Fisher, the research specialist will successfully work independently and collaborate regularly with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds, participate in assessment of sites being considered for managed recharge (using computational, field and lab methods), prepare field equipment for sampling of sediment and water, collect and process field samples, measure discharge in channels, conduct laboratory analyses, manage data files, prepare and update standard operating procedures for field/lab work, install and maintain computer software, maintain metadata, prepare and print presentation materials, organize supplies and equipment, operate power tools, and train others in these tasks. This position will include occasional long days that include: carrying equipment and supplies (up to 50 pounds) to/from a field vehicle, collecting field samples and data, and moving across uneven ground (with or without accommodation). Applicants with the following areas of experience are strongly encouraged to apply: experience in soil and fluid sample collection in the field; grain size analysis by laser diffraction; dissolved organic carbon measurements in pore fluids; use of a laser total station and GNSS system as well as programming and downloading data loggers; geographic information systems; operation of four-wheel drive vehicles and construction tools; strong written and verbal communication skills; and/or bilingual fluency in English and Spanish.
