Job Description

Dewberry is currently seeking a Solutions Architect to join our Resilience Solutions Group in our Fairfax, VA office. Remote location may be available on a case-by-case basis. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with a team of passionate scientists and engineers working on innovative and complex earth science and resilience applications. In this position, you will be responsible for supporting projects through design, experimentation, and analysis of open questions in science with a primary focus on hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) flood modeling and related risk analysis of natural hazards.

You will be part of a team that includes professionals with diverse backgrounds in hydrology, fluid dynamics, meteorology, computer science, geographic information systems (GIS), environmental science, civil engineering, oceanography, statistics, and machine learning. The role will include activities associated with software development including creation of geospatial datasets, writing of specifications, and development of APIs. Additional tasks will involve software architecture activities including designing, writing, reviewing, and maintaining individual libraries and packages and larger cloud-based systems.

Responsibilities

    Design and execute scientific experiments and workflows related to flood risk and resilience.
  • Gather requirements, design, write, maintain, and integrate software and components in cloud environments.
  • Manage geospatial workflows in hydrologic and hydraulic flood modeling.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team on a broad range of resiliency topics.
  • Ensure version control of projects using Git (GitHub).
  • Document processes and maintain reports related to data analysis.


Required Skills & Required Experience

Required Skills & Experience

  • 3-8 years of experience in developing tools and workflows for scientific analysis.
  • PhD in computer science, civil engineering, environmental engineering, or related technical discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of hydrologic systems and data structures including metadata standards and specifications
  • Demonstrated expertise in Python and open Geospatial libraries and frameworks.
  • Experience with open mathematics and statistics libraries (e.g., numpy, xarray).
  • Ability to handle large datasets efficiently (compression, spatial indexing).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and professional communication.
  • Knowledge of Docker for image development and orchestration.

Additional Skills Sought

  • Experience with Postgres (SQL + PostGIS).
  • Familiarity with Go programming language.
  • Experience with AWS services (S3, EC2, Lambda).
  • Familiarity with GitHub Actions for CI/CD.
  • Understanding of statistical machine learning techniques.
  • Experience in QGIS Plugin Development.
