Medical Director, Psychiatric Treatment and Recovery Center (PTRC)

About our Division: The PTRC is a 26-bed locked, acute psychiatric unit located at 26 Queen Street in Worcester, MA. This program is a flagship teaching program of the department. It provides acute clinical care to patients challenged by significant mental illness and have or will need intense community support following discharge.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide psychiatric and medical care to patients at PTRC, including diagnostic assessments, psychopharmacologic interventions, psychotherapy, and crisis stabilization.
• Serve as the clinical leader for the multidisciplinary treatment team, fostering collaboration and high-quality patient care.
• Supervise and mentor psychiatric nurse practitioners, psychiatry residents, and medical students assigned to the unit.
• Participate in the development, implementation, and review of unit policies and procedures to ensure compliance with best practices and regulatory standards.
• Lead or participate in regular treatment team meetings, contributing psychiatric expertise to patient care planning.
• Participate in departmental on-call services as scheduled.
• Perform case consultations with physicians and other providers, including risk assessments and support for complex clinical decision-making.
• Strong knowledge of mental health law as it pertains to patient care on the unit, in order to serve as an expert witness in legal proceedings.
• Actively participate in clinical quality improvement initiatives, peer review, and utilization review processes.
• Collaborate with nursing, social work, and administrative leadership to support staffing, training, and performance improvement efforts.
• Ensure a therapeutic milieu consistent with trauma-informed care, patient safety, and recovery principles.

Qualifications

Eligible individuals should have the following qualifications:

• MD or DO degree and current eligibility for a full Massachusetts medical license.
• Board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry.
• Previous inpatient psychiatric experience strongly preferred.
• Experience in clinical supervision and/or academic teaching desirable.
• Familiarity with forensic psychiatry, including experience or interest in providing expert testimony, is a plus.
• Demonstrated leadership abilities and strong interpersonal and communication skills.
