Design Engineer I - Electronic Components

Scope of role

Responsibility within the PES business segment for maintaining existing electronic components as well as assessing electronic components for new designs, including alternative selections for supply assurance and material cost out, hardware documentation, qualification/validation testing, and production and quality support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading the selection of electronic components and owning the analyses of the suitability of these components against specifications
  • Maintaining electronic component documentation (engineering change/deviation requests, component drawings, component specifications, approved vendor list components, etc.)
  • Interfacing and maintaining rapport with circuit board contract manufacturers, supply team, and electronic component sales representatives
  • Prototyping electronic circuits, documenting test methods/measurements/results, and completing technical reports with recommendations
  • Performing failure analysis of electronic components and circuits, and issuing reports on findings and recommendations on opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Utilizing design tools and simulation tools to evaluate new components and potential improvements
  • Assisting with the design of high voltage (115/230Vac & 460Vac) hardware electronic controllers for electric machines
  • Utilizing test equipment (scopes, curve tracers, semiconductor testers, RLC bridges, dynamometers etc.) to evaluate components and electronic controllers
  • Utilizing reliability chambers (thermal chambers, humidity, thermal shock, vibration) to test components and assemblies
  • Troubleshooting / maintaining, as necessary, custom test fixtures used for component qualification
  • Interacting with Application, Design, Reliability and other Electronic Engineers to meet customer/system requirements of hardware designs

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education / Experience / Skills:

- Bachelors of Science in Electrical or Computer engineering

- 1+ years relevant experience and/ or internship experience

- Familiar with mixed analog and digital circuits

- Knowledge and understanding of key characteristics of major electronic components (resistor, inductor, capacitor, diode, BJT, Mosfet, IGBT...)

- Experience with simulation software for the analysis of electronic designs

- Experience with and understanding of circuit schematics and component specifications

- Experience with testing and troubleshooting electronics

- High level of personal initiative, energy, and sense of ownership

- Self-directed and self-motivated with a track record of execution

- Skilled in organizing, prioritizing and coordinating working relationships with all levels of personnel within and outside of the organization

- Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously

- Experience with technical report writing and presentations

- Experience with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.)

Desired Qualifications:

- Familiar with RoHS and EHS guidelines

- Familiar with test procedures for EMI, hipot, electrical transients, ESD

- Familiar with agency testing (e.g. UL)

- Broad exposure to all types of electronic components, including power & signal, analog & digital, surface mount & thru-hole, printed circuits & coatings

- Experience with handling high voltage circuity

- Experience with evaluating reliability of electronic circuits

- Experience with electronic component selection

- Experience with the design of electronic circuits

- Six Sigma Training/Certification (Green Belt / DFLSS)
