The Opportunity with McKinstry

We are adding a Market Development Leader to our growing Distributed Energy Resources division. The Market Development Leader - DER will drive market expansion, strategic partnerships, and revenue growth for our Distributed Energy Resources (DER) business unit, which includes solar, battery storage, microgrids, and energy efficiency solutions. This role involves identifying new market opportunities, developing sales strategies, and cultivating high-value client relationships in commercial, industrial, and utility sectors. The ideal candidate is a strategic and results-driven leader with deep industry expertise, strong sales acumen, and a track record of closing high-value DER deals. Other responsibilities include:

Market Expansion & Business Strategy

  • Develop and implement a growth strategy to expand McKinstry's DER footprint.
  • Identify emerging markets, new customer segments, and strategic partnerships to accelerate revenue.
  • Lead market research and competitive analysis, positioning McKinstry as a leader in DER solutions.
  • Collaborate with the Business Unit Manager and executive leadership to align business development efforts with corporate objectives.

Sales Leadership & Revenue Generation

  • Oversee pipeline development, deal structuring, and contract negotiations for large-scale DER projects.
  • Work closely with sales teams to develop customized solutions for commercial, industrial, and municipal clients.
  • Close high-value deals and secure long-term agreements.
  • Establish KPIs for business development activities, tracking performance and ensuring sales targets are met.

Strategic Partnerships & Industry Engagement

  • Develop and maintain high-level relationships with utilities, regulators, investors, and technology providers.
  • Represent McKinstry at industry conferences, regulatory discussions, and policy forums to strengthen brand positioning.
  • Identify and pursue joint ventures, acquisitions, and investment opportunities to drive business growth.

Project Development: Vetting and Team Management

  • Directly responsibility for completing project viability assessment and economic and financial analysis for new opportunities.
  • Work with internal teams and external consultants to develop projects to meet client specific financial and climate action goals
  • Leverage internal team with technical scope development for new projects.
  • Responsible for ensuring developed project meet agreed upon goals with the client.
  • Act as primary point of contact with client until the project is under contract.
  • Lead the hand off of new projects under contract to the development and construction teams.
  • Strong understanding of interconnection, utility metering policy, project development challenges and strategies for de-risking renewable energy projects.

What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry

  • 10+ years of experience in business development, sales, or strategic partnerships within the renewable energy, energy services, or infrastructure sectors.
  • Strong track record of securing multi-million-dollar DER contracts in commercial, industrial, or utility markets.
  • Deep knowledge of energy markets, incentive structures (IRA, ITC, PPAs), and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience developing go-to-market strategies for distributed energy solutions.
  • Prior leadership experience managing sales teams, business development functions, or regional market expansion.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, construction management, or equivalent business experience required.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Visio required; working knowledge of SharePoint preferred.

The pay range for this position is $141,570 - $219,510 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Base pay information is based on market location. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
